| | S O S Band Best Of The S.O.S. Band CD (1995)
Must Be The Music songs
$11.05 (saxophone, keyboards, vocals); Abdul Raoof (trumpet, flugelhorn,
percussion); Jason "T.C." Bryant (keyboards, vocals); John Alexander
Simpson (bass, vocals); James Earl Jones III (drums, vocals); Jerome "JT"
All songs written by James Harris III and Terry Lewis except "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" (Harold Clayton/Sigidi) and "What's Wrong With Our Love Affair?" (Jason Bryant).
Like all greatest-hits or best-of compilations, this one is missing some key ingredients, namely "S.O.S. (Dit Dit Dit Dat Dat Dat Dit Dit Dit)" and "Just the Way You Like It." Since the band didn't record tons of material and was only active a short time, the omissions are hard to fathom. It's not like they didn't have room on the CD; only ten songs are compiled here. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are well represented with eight songs. Despite the omissions, this is still good listening. Mary Davis' vocals are irresistible; she can do it all. On "Take Your Time (Do It Right)," she shows her funk side, matching the driving, disco-like beat with some powerful vocals. On "Tell Me if You Still Care," she sings in a softer voice, similar to a Smokey ...

| | System X-Periment/Pleasure Seekers CD (2005)
Must Be The Music CD music
$10.49 Synth pop fans had reason to celebrate when Wounded Bird had the good sense to reissue X-periment and Pleasure Seekers on a reasonably priced two-for-one single disc in 2005. While none of the tracks on here are as superior as their breakthrough hit "Don't Disturb This Groove" or "You Are in My System," there are plenty of songs that will please the ears of the most die-hard devotee. Fans of modern day boogie producers such as Daniel Wang and fellow New York duo Metro Area will find happiness in the infectious, walking synth bassline and sparse production that balances the fine line between synthetic and organic instrumentation throughout most of these tunes, especially in the disc's leadoff track "I Wanna Make You Feel Good." There are moments of filler, but the solid techno-funk found throughout ...
| | Duke Ellington Pianist CD (1974)
Must Be The Music music CDs
$9.89 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1992, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California)
This is one of the infrequent albums where the Duke's often underrated piano playing is front-and-center. He often referred to himself as "a pencil cat"--that is, he wrote for what many (including perhaps, Duke himself) considered his instrument: the orchestra. But he was an excellent pianist, with a bluesy, thoughtful, humorous, spare style.
Ellington could convey more ideas in two or three well-placed notes than most pianists could in a 10-minute solo. Listen closely and you'll hear the influences of Gershwin, Ravel and Willie "The Lion" Smith melded seamlessly, and it's almost as if Ellington is a school of piano playing unto himself. If "Never Stop Remembering Bill" doesn't put you in a trance, or at least a wistful mood of romantic reverie, get yourself to a doctor. Relaxed, swinging sounds to unwind to; and fine stuff for fans of Duke and his piano.
Recorded in New York, New York in July 1966 and Las Vegas, Nevada in January 1970. Originally released on Fantasy (9462). Includes liner notes Ralph J. Gleason.
Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Gus Bivona, Johnny Hodges (saxophone); Harold Baker, Charlie Shavers ...
| | Edie Carey Call Me Home CD (2001)
Must Be The Music songs
$11.55 ABOUT "CALL ME HOME"..."Call Me Home," the second album from award-winning singer-songwriter Edie Carey is appropriately titled as the record calls Carey back to her roots in pop, the music that inspired her as a child. "People often assume I was raised on Pete Seeger and Joni Mitchell, and while my parents were fairly well-versed in folk, I thought it far too embarassing to like what they liked," jokes Carey. "So instead, I escaped to my room, rolling up my 10-year-old eyes, and began creating dance videos to the likes of Debbie Gibson, Mister Mister, and Madonna. I had such an incredible sense of freedom and abandon at that age...I wanted to recapture that feeling, and lace it into the music I am making now. I tried to conjure up what it was that would inspire me to dress up in sequins and start performing splits for unsuspecting relatives...that's always a good motivation for a song, right?"While Carey conveys that playful sense of abandon with songs like "Disco Ball Heart" (Track 1) and "Come Close" (Track 6), she also allows a glimpse of her more serious side, as she conjures emotions from everyday images she carves in haunting detail ("Violently," track 4; "August," track 2). While one story brings home the terror of confessing love to a roommate over a morning bowl of Wheaties ("Call Me Home," track 8), another places you behind the eyes of a mother who has lost her only daughter ("Black Wool Dress," track 9). The range of emotions as as wide as the range of styles she uses to convey them."Fall or Fly," track 3 off of "Call Me Home" won Edie a spot as a semi-finalist in "Roxygen on Oxygen," a music competition sponsored by Oprah Winfrey's website for women, Oxygen , and was heard on MTV's "Road Rules." Another track, "Come Close," was featured on the WB's "Charmed."Produced by Tom Cangemi, "Call Me Home" features such acclaimed musicians as drummer Shawn Pelton (Shawn Colvin, Saturday Night Live), bassist T-Bone Wolk (Shawn Colvin, Carly Simon, M2M), and special appearances by ModMusic Records' Trina Hamlin and Red House Recording Artist, Cliff Eberhardt.MORE ABOUT EDIE...* Finalist for Album of the Year, Independent Music Awards, 2004* Grand Prize, Guitar Center's "The Producer Project" Contest, 2004* Finalist, Telluride Bluegrass Festival Troubadour Competition, 2004* Finalist, Rocky Mountain Folks Songwriter Showcase, 2003-4* Honorable Mention, Billboard & USA Songwriting Contests, 2003-4* Songs featured on The WB's "Charmed" & MTV's "Road Rules" 2002* Performer, Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, UT, 2002* Opener, Melissa Ferrick Spring Tour 2004 & Fall Tour 2002With her warm, graceful voice and her knack for cutting "into a subject...with a diamond-edged blade**," Edie Carey grabs hold of her audiences and doesn't let go until she steps off the stage. While her songs are what first draw listeners in, it's what she says in between that keeps them coming back. Carey's wry and self-mocking humor, coupled with her ability to tell a great story, makes audiences feel as though they have just spent the evening with a very close friend. Given the triple threat of her magnetic stage presence, heart-grabbing songs, and almost unearthly voice, it's no wonder that the word about Carey is traveling fast. Performing Songwriter called her last release, When I Was Made, "a lovely, shimmering, heart-felt record"; Harp Magazine proclaimed it "bare of self-pity and full of down-to-earth revelation"; Paste declared it "vulnerable and pleasing...rich with humanity and insight," and Country ...
