Americana
$13.09 Personnel: John Zorn (alto saxophone); Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Dave Douglas (trumpet); Uri Caine (piano); Greg Cohen (bass instrument); Joey Baron (drums). Audio Mixer: James Farber. Recording information: Avatar Studio, New York, NY (02/22/2009). STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition ...

Americana
$13.59 Composer: Yves Wernert. Lyricist: Issa Bagayogo. Personnel: Issa Bagayogo (vocals); Mama Sissoko (electric guitar); Zoumana Tereta (violin); Mamadou Paté Diallo (flute); Yves Wernert (synthesizer, programming, background vocals); Amada Diarra (djembe, tom tom). Unknown Contributor Role: Issa Bagayogo. Arranger: Yves Wernert. For his fourth outing, Mali's Bagayogo, aka Techno Issa, relies less on the dancefloor for his music, and aims more for the head. It's a definite change, but one that advances his music by leaps and bounds, adding touches of jazz to "Dunu Kan," for instance, or bringing shadows into the sound on "Namadjidja." ...

Recording information: Electric Audio, Chicago, IL. Photographer: Gary Leonard. Unknown Contributor Role: Dan Massey. When X's John Doe and Exene Cervenka stepped out as the Knitters to explore their interest in country music, their efforts indirectly spawned the No Depression movement -- essentially, the group's lone album, 1985's Poor Little Critter on the Road, signified punk's return to its musical roots a half-decade before bands like Uncle Tupelo and the Jayhawks made such a move a genre unto itself. Poor Little Knitter on the Road celebrates the original album in style, assembling a dozen contemporary alt-country bands to re-create the record in its original running order; there's even a previously unreleased Knitters leftover, "Why Don't We Try Anymore," tacked on at the end for good measure. Without a vast catalog of songs to draw from, the disc is far more consistent and focused than the standard tribute record, highlighted by pairings like Kelly Hogan and the Rock*A*Teens' scorching collaboration ...
