From the opening salvo, "World War III," an intense little prog-funk number written by Nick Jonas, it is clear that the Jonas Brothers' fourth studio album is not a bid for more 'tween stardom, but rather a step towards creative daring and maturity. But those who've been watching the band since the start have noticed that the talented Brothers are anything but a pre-fab studio trick.
Strong instrumental and writing chops abound here on synth-rockers like "What Did I Do to Your Heart" and melodic power-pop anthems "Paranoid," "Poison Ivy," "Much Better," and "Don't Speak." Not everything works completely; the metallic pseudo-hip-hop track "Don't Charge me for the Crime," featuring rapper Common, seems like a bit of a reach, and some treacly ballads have been allowed to leak in, but the good outweighs the bad, and makes the future for this band seem limitless.

Rickie Lee Jones's second album, PIRATES, continues where her self-titled debut left off. With a record built upon storytelling, Jones resumes her role of poet laureate to the disenchanted and disconsolate. A strongly dynamic outing, the emotion of each song resonates in the detailed arrangements and freewheeling improvisations, the latter best epitomized by the funky party song, "Woody and Dutch on the Slow Train to Peking."
However, PIRATES is not a celebratory album. For the most part, this record is darker than its predecessor, and this tone yields even richer insights into Jones's art. For example, "Lucky Guy," a song Jones wrote about her relationship with singer Tom Waits, tells of love gone wrong and the resulting feeling of abandonment. Another poignant moment is the simple, almost plaintive refrain in "The Returns." On this song, Jones's sunken voice is buoyed by an unexpected lyric of hope. Probably the best fusion album ever made, and the coming together of five precociously talented musicians. Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter assembled the unit with little knowledge that the complex music would become so accessible. Two compostions stand out; the graceful 'A Remark You Made', an evocative love song without words, and the hit single 'Birdland' (so successful it was even used by Akai for a major advertising campaign). On these two Zawinul compostions their genius bass player Jaco Pastorius gives a taste of what he was capable of. He bent the notes to make them talk, and that high octave solo on 'Birdland' is still a treasured moment.
