Camere Con Vista
$14.65 An ambitious world fusion project, SIWAN brings together the Norwegian pianist Jon Balke, Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui, the Early Music ensemble Barokksolistene, minimalist trumpeter Jon Hassell, and others in a cross-cultural melange that imagines itself somewhere back in the medieval times of Andalusia, during the era when Spain was dominated by Muslim rule. With the expert help of Barokksolistene (Baroque solists), Balke has composed authentically evocative, Arabic-flavored settings for medieval Christian and Muslim poetic texts, fluently sung by Alaoui who sometimes resembles a serene flamenco singer or, better, a New Age descendant of the great Egyptian diva ...
| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Camere Con Vista
$13.09 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, ...

| | Mariza Terra CD (2008) Bonus Track
Camere Con Vista
$13.49 Terra feels like an attempt to move Mariza into the musical mainstream. She's already established herself at the forefront of fado, as one of the leading performers of the emotive Portuguese style, and there's no doubt she possesses a wonderful voice. But the addition of several guests, such as Chucho Valdés, Ivan Lins, and Tito Paris (among others) seems to open up the seams between fado and other genres, including Brazilian music and jazz. It does so relatively subtly, and she keeps her base pretty firmly in fado (witness the glorious "Ja Me Deixou"). ...

$12.35 When the legendary Sonny Rollins makes a record it is an event in the world of jazz. GLOBAL WARMING, a title that is reflective of Rollins' environmental concerns, is indeed a significant addition to the saxophonist's long career. As one of the elder statesmen of jazz, Rollins ...

| | Variable Unit Mayhemystics Outbreaks CD (2005)
Camere Con Vista
$13.25 It isn't hard to understand why some people might think of Variable Unit as a hip-hop/spoken word group with a strong sociopolitical agenda; the Bay Area residents ventured into sociopolitical territory in 2003 with Handbook for the Apocalypse and in 2004 with Mayhemystics (a collaboration with alternative rapper Azeem). But they showed another side of themselves on 2003's Cold Flow; that instrumental disc was strictly about beats and grooves -- not social or political matters -- and conceptually, Mayhemystics Outbreaks has much more in common with Cold Flow than it does with Handbook for the Apocalypse or Mayhemystics. Despite the presence of Azeem, this 2004 recording (released in 2005) is essentially an instrumental album. When you hear Azeem, or female vocalist Omega, they are functioning as background vocalists instead of featured vocalists; their work is very much in service of the instrumental groove. And like Cold Flow, this 27-minute CD it is not easy to categorize. Mayhemystics Outbreaks ...

| | Beautiful Collision EP CD (2009)
Camere Con Vista
$13.89 Beautiful Collision is more than just a band, but a bringing-together of two worlds. The quality of lyrical content that would normally be found exclusively in the Christian market is molded together with the musical influence and skill more commonly found in the secular music scene. This hybrid of uplifting lyrics and melodic, well written music is blended together to form what is truly a beautiful collision of two typically separate worlds.Since the summer of 2007, they have been developing and critiquing their style which has become a sound unto its own. The energy-filled rock is accented with hints of jazz and salsa. Blended together with the unique vocals of guitar player/singer, Adrian Perez, this sound is captivating and intense. Often taking advantage of the raw, organic feel of the acoustic guitar, Adrian’s intricate writing style shines through his skill with the instrument. Adrian’s brother, Jason, takes the energy of the music to its full potential with a fierce style of drumming that is powerful and dynamic. With the melodic and groove-oriented bass playing of Jordan Baker, the distinctive sound is tastefully brought to fruition. The band was formed in mid 2007 when Jordan saw Adrian performing an acoustic set at an open mic night in a coffee shop in Algonquin, IL. He was captivated by Adrian’s unique vocals and dynamic writing style. After the set, Jordan introduced himself and they started talking and decided to get together and jam sometime. Adrian indicated that his brother Jason played drums and could jam with them too. The first time they got together, Jason was visiting friends in Mexico (where Adrian and he lived for 10 years), so it was just Adrian and Jordan. There was instant chemistry both musically and personally! They felt as close as brothers after only a few hours and stayed up until 2am sharing life stories and getting to know one another. By the next jam session, Jason was back in town and the three decided to jam and see if they could write a song or two. After only a few minutes of playing together, the three knew it was a great fit. They began practicing more regularly and developing their skills in writing and performing. The three played their first show at a local festival called "Bandslam" in northern Illinois under the name "Yaneidi" ...
