Joao Gilberto is perhaps forever destined to be lesser known to casual jazz fans than his occasional collaborator Stan Getz (whose GETZ/GILBERTO albums introduced the United States to bossa nova) and his ex-wife Astrud Gilberto (whose shy, delicate voice made her one of the most distinctive and beloved jazz vocalists of the '60s). The Italian version of EROS contains 2 songs that do not appear on the Spanish version. It also contains 8 songs that are completely re-recorded. At the height of his popularity, after establishing a fan base for himself across much of Western Europe as well as parts of the Spanish-language world, Italian singer/songwriter Eros Ramazzotti took some time off during the late '90s and released Eros, a greatest-hits compilation comprised primarily of newly recorded material. The 16-track compilation is comprised of five songs that appear in their original versions, nine that have been newly recorded specifically for this compilation, and two new ones. While the decision to re-record the majority of the inclusions is unusual for a greatest-hits album, Eros ends up being a much more interesting album than it would have been otherwise. The nine songs that are re-recorded are the early hits of Ramazzotti, namely "Terra Promesa" (originally released in 1984), "Una Storia Importante" (1985), "Adesso Tu" (1986), "Ma Che Bello Questo Amore" (1987), "Musica E" (1988), "Se Bastasse una Canzone" (1990), "Cose Della Vita" (1993), and a couple others. Coming directly after the Desaparecidos' full-tilt READ MUSIC/SPEAK SPANISH, which was Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst's successful experiment with melding his usual minor-key teenage angst into the context of a full-tilt noisy rock & roll band, the brief Bright Eyes EP THERE IS NO BEGINNING TO THE STORY is a quick return to form. While this is no bad thing, especially since Oberst's blend of melancholy, sweetness and wry self-deprecation works best in the sparse, largely acoustic style of this album, there's a certain sense that this is a stopgap project. That said, it's a very good one, with the opening track, "From A Balance Beam," among Oberst's best songs ever. The oblique reference to "From A Buick 6" in the title is probably intentional, as the dizzyingly wordy lyrics speed by on a rush of unexplored metaphors like prime mid-'60s Dylan, set to a tune that recalls Neil Young's more introspective moments. The Young influence is made explicit on the vinyl version of this EP, which includes two bonus tracks not on the CD, one a live cover of Young's "Out on the Weekend."
