As any quick perusal of old Top 40 rock & roll station playlists will attest, singles were where the shakin' action was, as rock & roll albums were scarce as hen's teeth back in those pre-Beatle days. But when the record companies decided to issue one, it was usually an artifact of high rockin' value and some major influence. Naysayers to the contrary, this debut album by the Northwest's first great rock & roll combo is just such an artifact. The Wailers dispensed crude, greasy, largely instrumental rock & roll music for those who came to shake it up and shake it down, and it's all on fine, rhythmic, open display here. This album is amazing in its own simplistic, nuthin'-special way, its crudity almost palpable. There's only one vocal aboard, Kent Morrill's "Dirty Robber," later covered and torched by the Sonics. Everything else is built on the riff-sturdy bones of their biggest hit, "Tall Cool One." With two guitars, piano, sax, and drums -- no bass player anywhere on here, another crudeness indicator of the times and locale it was recorded in -- all blasting away like they're working a VFW Hall dance, hoof shakers like "Wailin'," "Shanghaied," "Beat Guitar" (featured in the soundtrack of the misguided Jerry Lee Lewis bioflick Great Balls Of Fire), and "Gunnin' For Peter" stand loud and proud as teen hall pre-Beatle rock & roll at its finest. Even more amazing is that the tonal crudity of this recording is enhanced even further on the stereo pressings of this album! Coming directly after the Desaparecidos' full-tilt READ MUSIC/SPEAK SPANISH, which was Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst's successful experiment with melding his usual minor-key teenage angst into the context of a full-tilt noisy rock & roll band, the brief Bright Eyes EP THERE IS NO BEGINNING TO THE STORY is a quick return to form. While this is no bad thing, especially since Oberst's blend of melancholy, sweetness and wry self-deprecation works best in the sparse, largely acoustic style of this album, there's a certain sense that this is a stopgap project. That said, it's a very good one, with the opening track, "From A Balance Beam," among Oberst's best songs ever. The oblique reference to "From A Buick 6" in the title is probably intentional, as the dizzyingly wordy lyrics speed by on a rush of unexplored metaphors like prime mid-'60s Dylan, set to a tune that recalls Neil Young's more introspective moments. The Young influence is made explicit on the vinyl version of this EP, which includes two bonus tracks not on the CD, one a live cover of Young's "Out on the Weekend." Full title, 'There Is No Beginning To The Story'. 'From A Balance Beam' is taken from his album 'The Story In The Soil'. Also includes 3 non LP tracks, 'Messenger Bird's Song', 'We Are Free Men' & 'Loose Leaves'. 2002. Recorded at Presto Recording Studios, Lincoln, Nebraska between December 2001 and January 2002.
