Out of a seemingly endless array of hip hop albums, every now and again something fresh and powerful rises to the top of the pile. Hailing from the Queensbridge Housing Projects in Long Island City (home to Marley Marl among others), 20-year old Nasir "Nas" Jones is less concerned with being an impersonator than with being an originator, bypassing adolescent fantasies and B-boy braggadocio in favor of jazzy beats, rap noir realism and new answers to urban despair. Aaron Neville's performance of "Don't Take Away My Heaven" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male." Aaron Neville's 1993 release THE GRAND TOUR continues a string of fine, highly polished recordings that make the most of Neville's silky tenor and New Orleans-bred soul in an adult-contemporary setting. While the slick patina of production (courtesy of Steve Lindsey) is a notable departure from Neville's rootsier early work (both solo and with the Neville Brothers), the singer's pure, lilting voice is still at the forefront here, and his falsetto flights, delicate timbre, and R&B embellishments are as affecting as ever. What makes THE GRAND TOUR particularly interesting is the choice of material. The album sports songs by writers as diverse as Bob Dylan ("Don't Fall Apart on Me Tonight"), Leonard Cohen ("Song of Bernadette"), and George Jones (the beautiful title track, a country weeper that suits Neville's vocals perfectly). Neville also rocks out old-school style on Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell," proving the backbeat still thumps in his musical heart. All comedy segments are in a continuous (un-indexed) sequence. Sam Kinison's third album, 1990s Leader of the Banned, was the comedian's last before dying two years later in a car crash. The first half of the album features a half-hour of standup comedy recorded at Bally's in Las Vegas, NV. "Jerry's Bastard Kid" offers a few chuckles when Kinison brings out Doug Bady, a member of his "Outlaws of Comedy" entourage, to criticize Jerry Lewis' annual MDA telethons for their lack of results. "Casual Users of Terrorism" offers a few tantalizing political remarks. On "Phone Call from Hell," Kinison supposedly places a real call to berate an audience member's unfaithful ex-girlfriend. For the second half of Banned, Kinison, who thought of himself as a "rock & roll comic" -- he had some success in 1988 with a novelty version of the Troggs' "Wild Thing" -- took this perception to extremes with his own hair metal versions of Cheap Trick's "Gonna Raise Hell," Mountain's "Mississippi Queen," the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb," and AC/DC's "Highway to Hell." He sings all four songs. Kinison alters the lyrics of "Mississippi Queen" and turns it into a novelty number, but the other three are "serious" covers. Many of Kinison's rock star pals perform on these remakes, including Eddie Money, House of Lords' Lanny Cordola and Chuck Wright, Mountain's Leslie West, Poison's C.C.
