Elton John spent much of the '80s in a whirlwind of personal upheaval and his musical unevenness included working with lyricists besides Bernie Taupin (an unthinkable notion during their run at the top of the charts during the '70s). EJ went ... Full Descriptionfor a fresh start by auctioning off all the costumes and props that he'd become renowned for during his over-the-top live shows. Right before doing this, the flamboyant entertainer revisited the past one more time by recreating his greatest hits live using orchestral accompaniment.
The resulting LIVE IN AUSTRALIA found the John donning a powdered wig and 17th century garb to lead this ensemble, along with members of his regular touring band. Older material such as "Burn Down The Mission," "Madman Across The Water" and "Take Me To The Pilot" is particularly breathtaking as presented in all its symphonic splendor while more obscure numbers such as "Have Mercy On The Criminal" and "The Greatest Discovery" remain odd yet interesting choices. The oddest result of this album's release was that "Candle In The Wind" unexpectedly became a hit 14 years after its original release. A slightly rewritten version dedicated to the late Princess Diana repeated this trick a decade later.
-IMPORT In England, this has so far only been released as a limited, numbered (5,000) edition, in a 12 X 12 box with deluxe booklet and other goodies.

My tape of this concert was stolen from my car years ago. I have raved about the awsome symphony music on it before and after it was stolen. Listening to these particular Elton John songs with that background is truely something else. Time for me to buy the CD !!!

Great Stuff
In fact Elton had an operation on his throat the next day as I recall. It is fascinating to listen to a pro perform without his best stuff and still give a wonderful performance. Songs one through six are as powerful a sequence as you will hear anywhere. As the reviewer above said, if you have children, that song is a killer.

This is a great cd. 14 tracks of his best music, given an added dimension by the full sound of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Probably his best cd.

Even though Elton wasn't in his best voice, this great live album is fantastic. The orchestra is truly amazing, recreating all the orchestral arrangements from the original recordings.

A brilliant recording of a sensational show
I was at the concert in Melbourne and it was wonderful. Elton was not in his best voice on the night but the costumes, the musicians and the orchestra more than compensated for it. For me this show proved that Sir Elton is easily on a par with Paul Mcartney in his ability to craft a song. Those older tunes which Elton cheerfully admitted he had forgotten most of the words, showed how even in his earliest days, he was an extraordinary talent. I go back to this recording again and again just for the song "The greatest discovery". It is so beautiful it is just haunting in its simplicity and yet devasatsingly moving.
