A Collection of Pop Classics could easily pass for a white supremacist album with its cover shot of guitar-toting Klansmen and song titles like "The New Aryans." Skinheads will be disappointed to find that the album cover, as well as the band's name, are actually deeply ironic commentaries on Ronald Reagan's social and economic policies. The anthology collects Reagan Youth's two albums, Volume One (1984) and Volume Two (1990), on one disc. Volume One is a classic of the hardcore genre with abundant hooks, energy, and righteous fury. Reagan Youth's theme song declares, "We are Reagan Youth, sieg heil!" while blasting Reagan's followers as "brainwashed slime." "The New Aryans" proposes a "final solution" for Nazis and the KKK, and "I Hate Hate" takes a humorously circuitous swipe at negativity. "Are You Happy" and "No Class" critique conformity, authority, and the dominant culture, while "Degenerated" blasts drug use (which, in a further irony, eventually brought down lead singer Dave Insurgent.) The 1990 album finds Insurgent fronting a new group of players who sound as if they traded their hardcore record collection for a copy of Mötley Crüe's first album. The leftist politics remain, but the song title "Heavy Metal Shuffle" shows which way the band is heading. Buy A Collection of Pop Classics for Volume One, which offers more than enough value for the money. ~ Greg Adams

why does everybody these days give labels out like candy, you think they wanted to be remembered as heroes than you oblivously dont understand the word "punk" its a way of life not a piercing you can take out tomorrow fad type deal, people like you killed the scene and seperated people worse than before.

The Washington, D.C. straightedge hardcore punk scene began with Minor Threat. The band recorded two LPs on its own Dischord label, plus an EP and the miscellaneous singles that are collected on this CD. Many of the early recordings on this collection seethe with teen-age angst and indignation. The songs rage against bullies, religious hypocrisy, and the herd mentality.
Other songs, taken from later in Minor Threat's career, feature tighter and more sophisticated playing. Metallic flourishes tinge the guitar work, vocal harmonies abound, and song dynamics vary more than on the earlier record. On certain songs, Ian MacKaye's lyrics address the complexities of friendship, loyalty, and self-expression. "Look Back and Laugh," "Little Friend," and "It Follows" all incline more toward introspection and ambiguity; conveying loss and sadness in addition to outrage. On GROUP SEX, the Circle Jerks' second full-length album, the band makes no great changes in its musical style. On the other hand, there really was no need for revision. Keith Morris (also an early vocalist for Black Flag) and his band mates had pretty much hit the nail on the head the first time out (WILD IN THE STREETS, appended to GROUP on some CD editions). The Jerks play the sort of very fast and very snotty punk rock--complete with thin, weedy vocals--that eventually became all the rage with such chart-topping bands as Green Day, the Offspring, and No Doubt.
