| | Social Unrest Complete Studio Recordings, Vol. 1 CD Social Unrest Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Most of Vol. 1 is terrific early-'80s Southern California punk. Though Dead Kennedys guitarist East Bay Ray's production on 1982's Rat in a Maze EP is so high-end it sounds more like a Norelco shaver than a set of guitars -- a fault largely corrected by Geza X when he mastered the classic "Making Room for Youth" 7" -- nothing could blunt this youthful, zealous, masterful collision of speed and melody, with the manic vocals of Creetin K-Os. Sadly, K-Os split, and the band's later recordings were more clichéd (sneering, snarling) though still decent. ~ Jack Rabid Complete Studio Recordings, Vol. 1 Music | List Price | $12.98 (You save $0.93) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Punk CDs, Rock | | Label | New Red Archives | | Orig Year | 1995 | | All Time Sales Rank | 101551 | | CD Universe Part number | 1412180 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Sep 01, 2001 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | East Bay Ray; Peter Miller; Social Unrest; East Bay Ray; Peter Miller |

| | Minor Threat Complete Discography CD (1988)
Complete Studio Recordings, Vol. 1
$10.65 The Washington, D.C. straightedge hardcore punk scene began with Minor Threat. The band recorded two LPs on its own Dischord label, plus an EP and the miscellaneous singles that are collected on this CD. Many of the early recordings on this collection seethe with teen-age angst and indignation. The songs rage against bullies, religious hypocrisy, and the herd mentality.
Other songs, taken from later in Minor Threat's career, feature tighter and more sophisticated playing. Metallic flourishes tinge the guitar work, vocal harmonies abound, and ...
| | P W Long's Reelfoot We Didn't See You On Sunday CD (1997)
Complete Studio Recordings, Vol. 1
$13.05 P.W. Long manages to create an album that has more mood swings than a manic depressive. Topics range from pained moments about his mom being ill to the happiness of adding a new dog to his life ("Jelly"). Although there are loud electric numbers and softer acoustic pieces, there is no unevenness to the music due to the fact that all of the songs are in a country-rock vein. This is exemplified especially well on the traditional piece "Bound to Ride," where -- if you close your eyes for just a moment -- you can envision a barn filled with dancers in ten-gallon hats kicking their boots up as Long and fiddle player ...
| | Still Screaming/This Side Up CD (1993)
Complete Studio Recordings, Vol. 1
$10.65 Though known primarily as Dave Grohl's first band of note, Scream in fact released its finest material years before Grohl's entry into the band. After the primary wave of D.C. hardcore -- SOA, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Government Issue -- crashed noisily to the shore, kids from the surrounding suburbs, attracted by the sound and fury of the city center, began formulating sounds predicated certainly on the first wave, but with enough outsider flair to be considered unique. Scream was one such band, and probably the finest. Boasting the incredibly gifted vocalist Pete Stahl and his brother Franz on guitar (the two later formed Wool), and rounded out by the rhythm section of Kent Stax and Skeeter Thompson, Scream fought their way into the tightly knit in-scene of D.C. hardcore, and were initially greeted with suspicion as suburban rednecks. Indeed, Scream's music borrowed as much from classic rock -- especially on This Side Up -- as it did from ...
| | Circle Jerks Group Sex CD (1980)
Complete Studio Recordings, Vol. 1
$9.25 Principally recorded at Byrdcliffe Studios, Culver City, California.
On GROUP SEX, the Circle Jerks' second full-length album, the band makes no great changes in its musical style. On the other hand, there really was no need for revision. Keith Morris (also an early vocalist for Black Flag) and his band mates had pretty much hit the nail on the head the first time out (WILD IN THE STREETS, appended to GROUP on some CD editions). The Jerks play the sort of very fast and very snotty punk rock--complete with thin, weedy vocals--that eventually became all the rage with such chart-topping bands as Green Day, the Offspring, and No Doubt.
As their name and the album title would suggest, the Circle Jerks are not a subtle band. "I Just Want Some Skank" and "World Up My Ass" stand as further examples of their in-your-face lewdness. Standout numbers include "Beverly Hills," an extremely pointed attack on the "upper class," and "Paid Vacation," an anti-military song built on Greg Hetson's buzz-saw guitar. In the latter, the introduction and several bridges recall western TV show theme music sped up to 78rpms.
Keith Morris once described his brief tenure as ...
