This is an unusual session. Accordionist Mat Mathews came up with the idea of utilizing four French horns as the leading voices on a jazz date so, with guitarist Joe Puma, bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Osie Johnson, Mathews welcomed the French horns of Julius Watkins, David Amram, Fred Klein and Tony Miranda. Watkins has the lion's share of the solo space on this CD reissue but all of the horns are heard from both as soloists and in the colorful (and sometimes imaginative) ensembles. This is a moody bop-oriented date that succeeds beyond its novelty value. ~ Scott Yanow
