| | O Yuki Conjugate Peyote CD O Yuki Conjugate Discography of CDs
Imagine the heat haze of a thousand deserts pressing upon you, the shared miasmic fever dream of ancient elders banging on clay pots, the expansive vistas and dangerous landscapes of long extinct topographies. These are the aural suggestions made real by O Yuki Conjugate, a British collective headed by multi-instrumentalist Andrew Hulme, who seem to know much about our ancestral past. PEYOTE remains one of the undisputed classics of fourth-world maximalism, a stunning hybrid of Jon Hassell, Beaver and Krause, and Steve Roach's similar forays.
"Snake Charm" slithers on a mass of struck objects, ghostly electronic shards, and haunted strings; "Long Pig" sounds as if it's carved from those things that go bump in the night, dancing the dance of ancestral electrons; "Still Breath" resonates with found sounds, awry percussion, and needlesharp synthesized flotsam. PEYOTE is an elegiac listening experience.

Purchase Peyote CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Citizen Cope Clarence Greenwood Recordings CD (2004)
Peyote album
$9.69 When a singer/songwriter fights the big record label -- in this case Dreamworks -- because it doesn't understand the artist's vision, then the artist buys his way out of a contract so he can go somewhere that cares, it's admirable and has a "this must be good stuff" allure for sure. Give one listen to The Clarence Greenwood Recordings and you might have a guess at why Dreamworks "mishandled" Citizen Cope. Ponderous, unfinished, and pointless when it's at its worst, the album Citizen Cope -- singer/songwriter Clarence Greenwood's alias -- fought so hard for is filled with metaphors and characters that are murky. Nothing in the surrounding context suggests you should try to figure them out either. A lost soul who falls in love with a billboard is the subject of "Pablo Picasso," but there's no insight, no pathos, and no point. It's sad when anyone mistakes inanimate objects for someone who loves ...

| | Susan Boyle I Dreamed A Dream CD (2009)
Peyote music CDs
$9.55 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," and a version of "Daydream Believer" that is easily the slowest on record. Boyle sings beautifully throughout, ...
| | Jimmy Buffett Buffet Hotel CD (2009)
Peyote songs
$9.74 Since Jimmy Buffett never leaves his comfort zone, it's hard to call 2009's Buffet Hotel a return to roots but, in a way, it is. Discounting the mock rap on "Turn Up the Heat and Chill the Rosé," this album doesn't even have the lingering country and reggae flavors that seasoned 2006's Take the Weather with You, with all of the songs riding a cool, mellow country-rock wave, the kind that has been his stock-in-trade since the `70s. There's a difference between being part of a tradition and being stuck in the past and Buffett is surely in the former, not shying away from the new millennial mess, admitting that we all have "A Lot to Drink About" and never flinching from his advancing years, most movingly on a cover of Bruce Cockburn's "Life's Short Call Now." Cockburn's song is paired with ...
| | Paul McCartney Good Evening New York City CDs (2009) With DVD; Digipak
Peyote album
$17.39 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises ...

| | Butch Escape CD (2006) (Import)
Peyote songs
$14.29 The rhythm of modern living is merciless, oftenly uncatchable for live beings whose heartbeats reflects more peacefull lifestyle, with less dramatic business and life changes. These two rhythms, rhythm of ambition and inner rhythm, is sometimes imposible to harmonize, usually body or spirit suffers. Sometimes one has need to escape from daily jobs and obligations, and get closer to nature. Such escape could be of different kind, it could be listening to the music which differs from that in our cars, interrupted with commercials, while we are in harry to get on time to our jobs. Different from that which is bombarding us on television, day by day. Even the musicians have such wishes, from time to time, to shift from reality, from music which is making and representing them professionaly successful, but intimately dissatisfied. In such times the albums like BUČ - ESCAPE are happening, showing other side of creativity, which is melody, composition and similar ...
