Blink Of An Eye CD music Recorded live in 1996, this reunion of Rob Brown and Matthew Shipp, who arrived in New York together in the mid-'80s, is a wealth of dialogue and a stellar example of musical camaraderie. Blink Of An Eye music CDs Here is a three-part suite based on the immediacy of the sonic idea as it translates without gimmick or artifice from one mind to the next and back, shifted, stretched, or downright changed as an offering for further dissection and sonorous unction. There are interstitial elements of Brown's knife-edge tone that set particularly well with Shipp's crescendoing left hand, first hovering, then pounding the middle register as Brown reaches for a slot between high and middle. When Brown moves over to the flute, Shipp's left-handed arpeggios dance all around his timbral notions, creating an echo of vibratory nomenclature to enclose one frame of reference while articulating a further one and bringing in the idea of becoming still once more. Everything is full-speed ahead, though there are dynamic breaks and continuances and the unfolding of dramatic tonal architectures that are layered in such textured balance that they create a towering, yet gentle perceived aural structure. Deft, wooly, and elegant, this disc is hot. ~ Thom Jurek

Blink Of An Eye songs. In the 1990s, Asian Improv Records was best known for documenting avant-garde jazz by Asian-Americans, including bassist Tatsu Aoki. But not everything that Asian Improv put out was avant-garde; on Jon Jang's unaccompanied solo piano outing Self-Portrait, he sticks to a very inside and melodic style of post-bop pianism. This very personal CD isn't about hard swinging -- combining elements of traditional Chinese music with such influences as Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, and McCoy Tyner, the acoustic pianist is consistently lyrical and introspective. Though the Chinese-American improviser provides reflective interpretations of Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday," Joni Mitchell's "All I Want," and Rodgers & Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone," Self-Portrait's primary emphasis is Jang's own compositions. Jang, who co-founded Asian Improv with tenor saxophonist Francis Wong in the late 1980s, was quite obscure when this CD came out in 1999, and his appealing introspection made one hope that he would become better known in the jazz world. ~ Alex Henderson
