Up until their 1974 album, PHENOMENON, England's UFO had issued several albums that did little to expand their cult fan base at home, let alone worldwide. But through an early-'70s tour with German metallists the Scorpions, they finally found ... Full Descriptionthe missing piece to the puzzle--guitar wizard Michael Schenker. UFO convinced Schenker to leave the Scorpions (which wasn't an easy task, since his older brother Rudolf was a member), and their '74 release sounds like a band reborn.
Schenker's stellar playing seems to have lit a fire under the compositions, many of which rank amongst UFO's all-time best--namely the soon-to-be live show-stoppers "Doctor Doctor," and "Rock Bottom" (as evidenced on UFO's classic STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT live set). PHENOMENON set the stage perfectly for such future hit UFO releases as LIGHTS OUT and OBSESSION.
Remastered Reissue. This Classic Album Comes With A Critique From A Key Rock Journalist & Includes Sleevenotes.
Recorded at Morgan Studios, London, England.
UFO: Phil Mogg (vocals); Michael Schenker (guitar); Pete Way (bass); Andy Parker (drums).Q (3/95, p.122) - 3 Stars - Good - "...The mix gives Mogg the limelight with Schenker riding free on a barrage of thrusting salvos....[PHENOMENON] cut[s] a fine, upbeat swagger, central to everything that was anathema to the arrival of punk rock..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.121) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Schenker was a new, modern guitar hero whose crunching riffs and clean solos reinvented UFO as a cutting-edge hard rock act." Phenomenon album
$12.75 Recorded live at The Amphitheatre, Chicago, Illinois; The Gardens, Louisville, Kentucky and in Youngstown, Ohio. Includes liner notes by Jon Sutherland.
One of the premier live rock albums of the '70s, STRANGERS features a band at its peak performing all its hits and fan favorites. The album was recorded during two nights in Ohio in 1978, when the band opened for Blue Oyster Cult. This reissue features remastered sound, extended liner notes, and the correct track sequencing.
The album's two bonus tracks, "Hot 'N' Ready" and "Cherry," get the album started in supreme hard-rock fashion. "Out in the Street" shows why Phil Mogg is overlooked as one of the premier hard-rock vocalists of his era, while "Only You Can Rock Me" features the guitar prowess of Michael Schenker. "Doctor Doctor" is probably the band's most well-known song, and this live version is more powerful than the studio original. The same can be said of "Lights Out," the title track of the band's most successful album. The band comes together and kicks it hard on the thunderous "Rock Bottom." Combining ...

Phenomenon album
$10.69 UFO had finally fulfilled their potential with 1977's exceptional hard rock tour de force, LIGHTS OUT, and released another prime slice of heavy metal just one year later, OBSESSION. While most '70s Euro-metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, etc., dealt largely with doom and gloom, UFO proved to have more in common with such US melodic hard rockers as Van Halen.
OBSESSION proved to be UFO's most successful studio album ever, on the strength of such hard rocking highlights as "Only You Can Rock Me" and "Ain't No Baby." Even though guitarist Michael Schenker again pushes the songs to the limit here with his superb playing, OBSESSION would prove to be his final studio album with UFO. After just one more release, the classic live set STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT, Schenker left to briefly rejoin the Scorpions, before launching the Michael Schenker Group.

Phenomenon CD music
$10.69 Although Euro-rockers UFO had built a solid fan base worldwide amongst metal heads with such releases as PHENOMENON, FORCE IT, and NO HEAVY PETTING, the band had yet to issue a solid album from beginning to end. This changed with their 1977 release, LIGHTS OUT.
As with the aforementioned titles, guitarist Michael Schenker's six-string heroics are the real determining factor to UFO's sound--look no further than his fluid soloing skills on the barnstorming title track. But you'll find other metallic standouts throughout LIGHTS OUT, such as the album-opening good times anthem "Too Hot to Handle," and the Zeppelin-esque "Electric Phase," as well as more subdued fare such as "Try Me." LIGHTS OUT remains one of UFO's finest recordings.
1999 digitally remastered edition of the group's sixth full length studio album, their third recorded for the Chrysalis label. Many fans advocate this set as their best time in the studio, with singer Phil Mogg hitting his stride as a confident vocalist ...

Phenomenon music CDs
$13.99 While Nappy Roots have been gloriously reveling in their own "country" style since the mid-1990s, it wasn't until 2002, when their critically lauded debut WATERMELON, CHICKEN & GRITZ, featuring the crossover hit "Po' Folks," dropped that the rest of the world was let in on the party. Not content to simmer in success, the six-member hip-hop outfit swiftly followed up that record a mere year later with the solid WOODEN LEATHER. Hailing from Kentucky (well, two of the members are Oakland imports), Nappy Roots play an appealing hybrid of rap in the league of artists like Outkast, Mos Def, Organized Konfusion, and the Native Tongues, with wit betraying an understated intelligence and an ability to create an organic world that's distinctly its own. Nappy Roots also recognize a good hook when they see one, as evidenced by "Roun' the Globe," with its refrain "the whole damn world is country" over a frenetic Afro-folk landscape. They also prove their ability to scribe singable message songs on the should-be megahit "Sick & Tired" (best moment--the call and answer "I'm sick & tired of running and ducking/quit runnin' then"). Also, one of the most compelling up-and-coming R&B stars, Anthony Hamilton, drops by for the smoothly powerful "Push On." And it goes on and on as the Nappy Roots continue to carve a healthy niche for their brand of country ...

Phenomenon Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews 33 yearsof Schenker
I'm 48 this August and vividly recall driving my '72 Toyota Celica at age 16 with a lime green colored 8 track tape in a Sanyo tape player entitled UFO/Phenomenon. Along with the first Montrose release, these were my 2 favorites. I wore that UFO tape out primarily because I was an aspirimg rock guitarist myself. Trust me when I say rock guitar absolutely does not get any more class nor does it get any more classic. Submitted by Mark J. Dalton (Granite Falls , NC) Was This Review Helpful? Landmark album for UFO UFO's sound was defined by this album which introduced Michael Schenker. It marked their move away from a highly experimental sound into some well written, solid songs with lots of opportunities for the musicans to show what they were capable of. A great place to start for curious music fans.
The start of a great number of albums to come. Submitted by John (Ontario, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

Essential, but Where's the Bass? After this one they only had to perfect their craft as all the elements were finally in place. This is THE essential UFO album.
As for the production, I don't remember it being so bass-less, but I can deal with that. Submitted by Mark (Pierre, SD) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Essential listening "Rock Bottom" is an ALL-TIME classic, I don't think any hard rock/metal fan would dispute that. Although this is not as hard as its follow-up ("Force It") the guitar playing is "phenomenal!" "Too Young to Know" has some incredible guitar playing, as does "Oh My." Quite frankly, if one listens to the guitar solos, EACH song on this album, I mean cd, is worth it. Schenker has indicated that solos are his favorite part of a song, and it shows Submitted by Schenker Fan (USA, Baby) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
