| | Henry Mancini Dear Heart And Other Songs About Love CD Henry Mancini Discography of CDs
This French reissue features classic tracks by legendary composer Henry Mancini, including "Girl from Ipanema" and "Dear Heart."
Dear Heart and Other Songs About Love is billed as Henry Mancini's first all-choral album, but he had worked with a vocal chorus many times in the past, so the "departure" is not very unusual. "Soldier in the Rain" is an instrumental piece with a wordless chorus of the sort that filled many an instrumental album of the era, but the rest of the tracks are actual songs performed by a mixed choir. The vocals and instrumentation are credited to Henry Mancini & His Orchestra & Chorus, an assemblage of studio artists. The songs encompass soundtrack cuts ("Dear Heart"), recent hits ("The Girl from Ipanema"), assorted pop compositions, and one delightful novelty ("The New 'Frankie and Johnnie' Song"). Mancini is better known for his orchestral arrangements -- his choral arrangements are well-done, but not as "intriguingly original" as the liner notes would lead you to believe. Dear Heart and Other Songs About Love lacks the readily identifiable sound of a Ray Conniff, for example, but is similar in tone and construction. A vocal version of Mancini's theme, "Mr. Lucky," is one item of special interest on this album. ~ Greg Adams

| | Art Of Carmen Mcrae/For Once In My Life CDs (2004)
Dear Heart And Other Songs About Love music CDs
$10.59 This 2004 double disc of Carmen McRae released by Collectables continues the label's efforts to chronicle her stay with Atlantic Records from 1967 to 1972. She was near the top of her interpretive powers during this era, turning standards and contemporary pop songs into personal expressions of joy and heartache. Her voice, while not as pure as it had been, is still a thing of wonder, very powerful and always very much her own. The Art of Carmen McRae gathers songs from the two live records she released for Atlantic, Live at the Century Plaza and the incredible The Great American Songbook, as well as the studio albums (excepting For Once in My Life, which makes up the whole of the second disc), singles, and for some reason the Bittersweet ...

Dear Heart And Other Songs About Love songs
$41.15 Designed as a companion piece to a PBS documentary of the '60s, Shout! Factory's triple-disc box set The '60s Rock Experience is a basic collection of 59 tracks from the most storied decade of the 20th century (what a shame they weren't able to make it 60 tracks, though!). Actually, the compilers bend the rules a little bit and add several songs from the '70s -- the Grass Roots' 1971 "Sooner or Later," Pacific Gas & Electric's 1970 "Are You Ready?," Five Man Electrical Band's 1971 "Signs," the Grateful Dead's 1970 "Casey Jones," Edwin Starr's 1970 "War," and the Temptations' 1970 "Ball of Confusion" -- but that doesn't really matter, since the sound and aesthetic of these tunes are tied to the late '60s. And make no mistake about it -- The '60s Rock Experience is all about the late '60s, with everything except the Kinks' 1964 "You Really Got Me" and the Bobby Fuller Four's 1964 "I Fought the Law" dating from 1965 or later. ...
| | Aaron Neville Tell It Like It Is CDs (2005)
Dear Heart And Other Songs About Love album
$13.25 Aaron Neville's vocal styles cover Soul, Funk, Jazz, Blues & Gospel. His early work is some of his most creative. On this CD, Neville slips through the many styles that he has developed over the years to give a complete view of his exceptional vocal skills. On several tracks his unique talent is fully exposed when only guitar, drums and voice are featured. Other tracks blend an orchestra to compliment his rich vocal style, his beautiful renditions of classic songs like "Feelings" and "Cry Me A River", balance this CD.
Though not as carefully compiled or lovingly packaged as one might like (perfunctory liner notes, no musician credits, no information about the songs' original releases, etc.), this is a pretty good and attractively priced collection of songs from the great Aaron Neville's early and middle career. You won't find any ...
| | Boo Boo Davis Drew, Mississippi CD (2006)
Dear Heart And Other Songs About Love CD music
$13.59 There's something very interesting going on here. Although the album's credited to Boo Boo Davis, he's only part of the equation, since it's others who bring definite hip-hop tinges to the music and give it a contemporary edge. Although there's a sense of adventure to much of it, and the loops and scratching form part of the canvas, it's still quite definitely rooted in the Mississippi blues that Davis has been recording for several years (the album's named for his hometown). He's a strong singer, a natural bluesman who can make the harp wail, while still capable of a true gutbucket sound ...
