| | Yes 90125 CD (2009) Gold
Frampton
$19.98 When Jon Anderson rejoined Yes after DRAMA, he was inserting himself into an unusual situation. Keyboardist Geoff Downes and longtime guitarist Steve Howe had left to form Asia with prog rock vets John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music etc.) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Chris Squire and Alan White brought original Yes keysman Tony Kaye back and recruited vibrant young Australian guitarist/vocalist/composer Trevor Rabin. The quartet had already begun writing and recording, but Anderson was able to insert himself into the proceedings with such ease that the new combination sounds completely natural on 90125.
Mostly, the band was concerned with trimming the musical fat to keep pace with the onslaught of the 1980s. Thus, tracks like "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and "City of Love" are full of samples, splices and almost funky beats and riffs. The unusual time changes and complex riffs of tunes like "Changes" and "Cinema" leave little doubt that this is still a Yes album, but the band succeeds in giving their sound ...
| | Michael Buble Crazy Love CD (2009)
Frampton
$15.05 Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's more fun to be had. And what fun it is with Bublé swinging through "All of Me," and killin' Van Morrison's classic "Crazy Love" with a light and yearning touch. And just as "Home" worked to showcase Bublé's own writing abilities, here we get the sunshine pop of "Haven't Met You Yet" -- a skippy, jaunty little song that brings to mind a mix of the Carpenters and Chicago. Throw in a rollicking and soulful duet with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings on "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)," and a fabulously old-school close-harmony version of "Stardust" with Bublé backed by the vocal ensemble Naturally 7, and CRAZY LOVE really starts to come together. Then Bublé goes and throws in a last minute overture by duetting with fellow Canadian singer/songwriter Ron Sexsmith on Sexsmith's ballad "Whatever It Takes." A devastating, afterglow-ready paean for romance, the song is a modern-day classic that pairs one of the most underrated and ignored ...

| | Atlas Sound Logos CD (2009)
Frampton
$11.64 Bradford Cox was a virtual song machine during the time between Deerhunter's CRYPTOGRAMS and the Atlas Sound's LOGOS, churning out officially released material as well as plenty of songs only available on his blog. Over that span of time, he became a finer and more fluid songwriter, and his music emerged from the experimental fog of his earlier work just enough to give listeners tantalizing glimpses of almost ridiculously catchy songs. LOGOS keeps this push-pull between challenging and charming, yet Cox's second solo album still feels more experimental than Deerhunter, if only because he seems completely unfettered by any kind of rules or concerns about consistency. These songs barely sound like each other, yet they all sound like Cox. LOGOS comes into focus slowly with its first three songs. "The Light That Failed"'s hazy atmospheres slip effortlessly into "An Orchid"'s spectral recall of MICROCASTLE's psych-pop, but it's "Walkabout," Cox's irresistibly sunny collaboration with Animal Collective and Panda Bear's Noah Lennox, that announces that the album has truly arrived--it's as sudden, and satisfying, as tuning in a perfect pop song from radio static. From there, the album hops from sound to sound, ranging from acoustic rambles like "Criminals" to glitchy confections like the kaleidoscopic "Washington School." However, LOGOS' most striking moment is "Quick Canal." Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier lends her instantly recognizable vocals, which pile atop spiralling electronics ...
| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
Frampton
$13.14 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should take it slow" over swooping strings, brass, and piano that resurrect the glory days of AM pop; that feeling is echoed by the cover of Joe Raposo's "Sing," the Sesame Street song that gained popularity when the Carpenters performed it (Emilio Delgado, aka Sesame Street's Luis, duets with Forbes here in Spanish and English). The album's first few tracks are among its most playful, including the slinky yet winking "Ohayoo Ohio" and the French confection "Ou Est Ma Tete?" While Pink Martini gets almost too cute for their own good with "And Then You're Gone" and "But Now I'm Back," a pair of songs about a quarreling couple inspired by Franz Schubert's "Fantasy Piano for Four Hands" and featuring NPR justice correspondent Ari Shapiro on the latter's vocals, SPLENDOR ...

| | Dashboard Confessional Places You Have Come To Fear The Most CD (2001)
Frampton
$11.49 It will always be a difficult gambit writing intelligent, heartrending indie-rock guitar ballads wrought with agony without resorting to pretension, syrupy self-pity, or both. Dashboard Confessional manages to avoid such pitfalls with insightful, poignantly etched stories of the end of love and the edge of love, elegantly playing with words while keeping hackneyed lines and cornball moments at bay. DC's second album, THE PLACES YOU HAVE COME TO FEAR THE MOST, continues the Vagrant label's ascent into the forefront of earnest, emotional indie rock.
Dashboard Confessional is actually the vehicle for the musings of one man, Chris Carrabba. The frontman for at least two Florida rock bands, he derived the name from a line in one of his songs. Carrabba wears his heart on his sleeve on pleading, stirring break-up songs like "The Good Fight" ("claimed you as my only hope and watched ...

During the rebellion of Greg's teenage years in the 1960's and 70's, he was birthed into a time of unrestrained pleasure, violence and self-indulgence. $11.39 January 2007 saw the release of Chris Swinney’s third CD entitled…â€Major 3rdâ€. His influences are as apparent as ever but his melodies, lyrics and arrangements all carry his original style. There is certainly no marked change in direction from his previous CD, “Was it something I said?†with the songs being at least as strong...and hard-hitting in places! The opening track, “Out of my lifeâ€, is a rousing, catchy power pop song, “Just when I thoughtâ€, is a beautiful and thoughtful ballad, ...
