DEEP CUTS: BEST OF BALLADS features 15 songs in the vein of the chart-topping power ballad "To Be With You". In the early '90s it seemed the radio could not get enough of Mr.Big's power ballad "To Be With You." With the rise of rap and short-hair rock, Mr.Big eventually disappeared from the airwaves. It seems that their fan base has not, however, so they have released a collection of their ballads (complete with short hair), including the big radio hit that grabbed them a lot of attention from non-rock audiences. The rockin' ballads on Deep Cuts are best considered as an early-'90s phenomenon, intended mainly for die-hard Mr.Big fans who refuse to let the band fade into the "where are they now" netherworld. ~ Diana Potts Deep Cuts: Best Of Ballads Music Mr Big Deep Cuts: Best Of Ballads Songs Deep Cuts: Best Of Ballads Review

$6.49 ASYLUM was Kiss' first LP with guitarist Bruce Kulick. Kiss: Paul Stanley (vocals, guitar); Bruce Kulick (guitar); Gene Simmons (bass); Eric Carr (drums). Principally recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Robert V. Conte. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Personnel: Paul Stanley, Bruce Kulick (guitar); Eric Carr (drums). Audio Mixer: Dave Wittman. Audio Remasterer: Joseph M. Palmaccio. Liner Note Author: Robert V. Conte. Recording information: Electric Lady Studios, New York, NY; Right Track Studios, New York, NY. Photographer: Bernard Vidal. By 1985, Kiss was a shadow of its former self. Gone was the raw rock of their not so distant past, as well as their memorable, "heavy Beatles" songwriting. In its place was a sound that was too similar to other pop-metal bands at the time, as well as unimaginative, predictable songs, as evidenced on Asylum. The album marked the appearance of Kiss' fourth guitarist in four years, Bruce Kulick -- brother of Bob Kulick, who played as a session guitarist on Alive II, Killers, and Paul Stanley's 1978 solo album -- who had replaced Mark St. John on the 1984-1985 Animalize tour. Besides the popular video/single "Tears Are Falling," Asylum is chock-full of nondescript fluff ("I'm Alive," "Trial by Fire," "Secretly Cruel," "Love's a Deadly Weapon," etc.). Although the band again treads on Spinal Tap territory with "Uh! All Night," several tracks could have benefited greatly ...

Deep Cuts: Best Of Ballads
$23.05 Phish: Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon, Page McConnell. Though the performance is filled with rarities that will appeal to the band's longtime fans, Live Phish, Vol. 12 mostly shows the band in the malaise they entered following their last great year of barnstorming performances in 1995, but before they reinvented themselves as a consummate arena funk act in 1997. Much of the year was spent searching for a sound. Historically, then, this performance from August 1996 -- recorded three days before the band's legendary Clifford Ball Festival -- is interesting. Notably, the show features early acoustic performances of several numbers that would be included on Billy Breathes (released later that year), including "Train Song" and "Waste." These sorts of ballads were still quite new to the band, and it is evident that they still hadn't quite learned how to play them live yet. Later, such ...
