Recorded in the same year as the Brothers and Sisters album, this solo debut release is a beautiful amalgam of R&B, folk, and gospel sounds, with the best singing on any of Gregg Allman's solo releases. He covers his own "Midnight Rider" in a more mournful, dirge-like manner, and Jackson Browne's "These Days" gets its most touching and tragic-sounding rendition as well. Although Chuck Leavell and Jaimoe are here, there's very little that sounds like the Allman Brothers Band -- prominent guitars, apart from a few licks by Tommy Talton (Cowboy, ex-We the People), are overlooked in favor of gospel-tinged organ and choruses behind Allman's soulful singing. ~ Bruce Eder

Terrific Music Wonderful CD. You can almost feel Gregg dealing with the tragedies of the Allman Brothers Band. His plaintive wail and song selection (Don't Mess Up a Good Thing is the only uptempo number) convey a sense of loss and longing. Truly an emotional collection. Classic - smooth as silk The album that revealed just what makes the Allman Bros Band great. This one never gets old. I'll never forget my 2-year old (now a 30-year old) playing on the living room carpet pulling out my LPs and making his way to the kitchen tile and "sanding" the floor with my new "Laid Back" album that he had somehow removed from the jacket... 2 LPs and 2 CDs later, this is still worth buying... ALL THE SONGS ARE GREAT GREGG's first solo album is a real winner. He does his own covers of such ALLMAN BROTHERS classics as MIDNIGHT RIDER and PLEASE CALL HOME and also a cover of the JACKSON BROWNE classic THESE DAYS. And a great cover of the song WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN. Submitted by Joel (Miami Fla.) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo

Gregg Allman-Laid Back His absolute best. I keep waiting for him to come up with something even close. C'mon Gregg, I KNOW you have it in you.
If stranded on a desert island with only five CD's, this is definantly one you'd want. Hard to find, my CD was stolen, and it can't be replaced. Only available on cassette. Submitted by a reviewer (Atlanta, GA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
