If you want to go straight to the source and hear real Cajun music without any hint of crossover, look to the Balfa Brothers. Though they were a popular live attraction as early as 1948, Dewey, Will, Burke, Harry, and Rodney (with assistance from family friend Hadley Fontenot on accordion) didn't record their first LP until 1965. Their second followed a full nine years later. Both are included on this seminal Cajun disc, and the purity of the group's performances is stunning.
Theirs is an entirely acoustic sound, based on the jangling rhythm of the guitar, the sprightly tinkling of the triangle, and two wailing fiddles, alternately melancholy and joyous. That a Western violinist should choose to pair with the illustrious Ravi Shankar is not in itself surprising. The violin was fully absorbed (and tuned much lower) by the Indian classical music establishment by the 19th century, and more recently has produced performers such as Dr. L. Subramaniam, Lalgudi Jayaraman, and the highly experimental L. Shankar. However, aside from being a highly accomplished set of recordings, the WEST MEETS EAST series--three Menuhin-Shankar collaborations that were later distilled into this one--elevated world music to new heights.

Miss Anna's Music Class: a pre-primer for little folkies is a sing-along, dance-along, play-along album for younger children.Anna sings mostly traditional finger-plays and play-party songs, in a pleasant acoustic folk style. 15 children sing-along on "She'll Be Comin Around the Mountain". The Jazzy guitar playing of John Devens is featured on the Louis Armstrong classic, "What A Wonderful World". A capella songs and verses are mixed in with songs accompanied by guitar and banjo. This CD is an audio version of the popular music classes Anna Stange offers for very young children and their parents. Lyrics for all songs are included on the CD jacket. Russian lyrics for "May There Always Be Sunshine", and German words for "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" are also included. Folksinger ANNA STANGE offers her upbeat programs featuring traditional folk songs to audiences all across the United States. From ballads to singalongs, Anna's shows feature old favorites from the American folk traditiona and newer songs she's gathered along her travels. She picks up new songs from people she meets on her travels, recordings, and by making up new words to old songs.
