In the two years following Eric Clapton's appearance at George Harrison's 1971 Concert For Bangladesh, the former guitar god took a sabbatical from playing, due to a number of personal problems. Alarmed at the state that his friend had fallen into, Pete Townshend arranged an all-star concert at London's Rainbow Theatre, where a band that included Ron Wood, ex-Blind Faith (Steve Winwood, Rick Grech) and current Traffic members (Jim Capaldi, Rebop) helped Slowhand play his first live show in two years.
RAINBOW CONCERT, an album of edited segments from the live show, finds a rejuvenated Clapton revisiting his days with Cream ("Badge"), backing Winwood's soulful vocals with some sanctified playing of his own ("Presence of The Lord"), and paying tribute to a fallen comrade ("Little Wing"). On Traffic's "Pearly Queen," the combination of Clapton's guitar with the swirling keyboards and thundering rhythm of the song make for some mesmerizing listening. ...

Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of such ostensibly laconic tunes as "Lonely Girls" and "Righteously." Meanwhile, songs that already had plenty of bite in their studio versions are pumped up to an even more electrifying, visceral level (a bold, crunching "Changed the Locks;" the roaring, bluesy "Joy"). The debt Williams and her band owe to Neil Young & Crazy Horse is illuminated on "Are You Down," and, elsewhere, a spoken intro finds the singer laying bare her affection for ZZ Top. After plugging in at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, Bob Dylan's break with the folk scene was complete. The ensuing sonic assault caused pandemonium among the crowd, including an apoplectic Pete Seeger, and ruptured Dylan's standing among many of his longtime fans. This collection of Dylan's performances at the festival, taken over three years and filled with plenty of never-before-seen footage, charts his rapid evolution as an artist.
