Love Songs album
$12.15 Collectables Records' two-CD set By Request/Sing to Me, Mr. C. combines two early-'60s Perry Como albums. By Request, actually the later of the two discs, having been released initially in 1962, finds Como tackling some of the best songs of the day, the album given over to early-'60s hits like "Can't Help Falling in Love" and "Moon River." Of course, those songs are closely associated with other singers, but Como puts his stamp on them, as he does with such quality material as "Maria" from West Side Story and "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music. Sing to Me, Mr. C., originally released in 1961, keys off the popular medley segment of Como's TV show, complete with performances of his opening and closing themes, plus six medleys of three songs each. (The nearly 43-minute running time, unusually long for a pop album of the era, made it impossible for Collectables to put the two albums on one CD.) The medleys ...
| | Perry Como Saturday Night With Mr. C./When You Come To The End Of The Day CDs (2001)
Love Songs CD music
$12.29 Collectables Records' Saturday Night With Mr. C./When You Come to the End of the Day actually packs two and a half vintage Perry Como albums into its two-CD package with a running time of nearly an hour and three-quarters. That's because, having been pushed to two discs by the unusually long running time of Saturday Night With Mr. C., the label has added even more material, culling six of the 12 songs from the 1959 album Como Swings as bonus tracks. At a release price of $13.50 for 40 tracks, the resulting compilation is quite a bargain. That said, the pairing is an odd one. Saturday Night With Mr. C. and When You Come to the End of the Day were both originally released in 1958, but they're very different records. The former is a kind of audio equivalent of Como's TV show, beginning with his opening theme and ending with his closing theme, in between including two introductory bits of his "Letters Theme" that serve to structure the disc as if it were an extended request segment from the show. Como performs a large number of miscellaneous standards in relatively brief renditions, following, for example, "The Whiffenpoof Song" with "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue ...
| | Andy Williams Love Theme From The Godfather/The Way We Were CD (2002)
Love Songs music CDs
$10.39 In its matching up of Andy Williams titles for a two-fer release, Collectables Records has opted to combine Williams' spring 1972 album Love Theme From "The Godfather" with his spring 1974 album The Way We Were, skipping over his fall 1972 album Alone Again (Naturally) and his fall 1973 album Solitaire. (Those two are together on another disc.) The theory may have been that these two both had something to do with the movies while the two in between did not, but in fact all of these albums take the same approach, more or less. That approach is to have Williams present his interpretations of songs from the pop charts of the period. As it happens, these two albums mark significant milestones for the singer, albeit of opposite sorts. Buoyed by the success of the title track, which was Williams' last Top 40 pop hit, Love Theme From "The Godfather" was his last significant seller, his final gold album. The Way We Were, on the other hand, was a commercial disaster, Williams' first LP to miss ...
| | Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head/Get Together With Andy Williams CD (2002)
Love Songs songs
$10.55 This entry in Collectables' series of discount-priced two-fer reissues of Andy Williams' albums combines two successive releases originally issued in 1969 (Get Together With Andy Williams) and 1970 (Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head). The compilers have sequenced the albums out of order, probably mistakenly, since the original catalog numbers would have suggested that Raindrops came first. The compilation would have worked better if the albums were presented in release order. Get Together was a typical Andy Williams album of the time, one on which he simply listened to what was on the radio in the spring of 1969 and picked out some tunes he liked -- Stevie Wonder, Neil Diamond, a couple of songs from the musical Hair that had become pop hits. He wasn't particularly effective on such material, but he was much stronger when taking on a big ballad like "Yesterday When I Was Young" or "Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet (A Time for Us)." Raindrops appears to have started out (prior to Get Together) as a far more ...
| | Ray Conniff It Must Be Him/Honey CD (2002)
Love Songs album
$10.55 A good matchup of two similar and consecutive LP releases is offered on this discount-priced two-fer. It Must Be Him and Honey were Ray Conniff's first two albums of 1968, and they were among his more successful, each enjoying a long chart run and earning gold record certification. Conniff had updated his arranging style by this point, adapting himself to the rock revolution by bringing in electric guitars and beefing up the sound of the rhythm section, but he hadn't changed his basic approach. All 22 tracks here are his versions of songs that were in the pop charts between 1964 and 1968, originally recorded by the likes of British Invasion acts like the Beatles and Herman's Hermits as well as a slew of middle-of-the-road pop singers. Some of the songs, notably "Yesterday," "Sounds of Silence," and "Goin' Out of My Head," as well as the trio of songs written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and the two written by Jimmy Webb, have gone on to become standards. Others are more of their time, though they may spark a smile of recognition ...
