Harem Scarem
$14.65 What happens when you throw three virtuosos together in a room and tell them to create something that showcases their abilities and is also interesting to listen to? Tone Center Records found out when they commissioned the fiery Aussie guitarist Frank Gambale, bass monster Stuart Hamm and drum god Steve Smith for the self-explanatory SHOW ME WHAT YOU CAN DO. The result is a power trio album of tremendous strength and envelope-pushing musical madness.
From the thunderous opening of "Bad Intent," it's obvious these boys didn't waste time getting to the good stuff. The testosterone is flowing heavily into the driving groove of "The Promise" as Gambale's piercing guitar surfs over Smith and Hamm's relentless pounding. Later, things take a on somewhat lighter shade on the slinky "Sink," until a powerful drum intro by Smith leads into a driving chops-fest known as "Wrong And Strong." Downshifting into low gear, the expressive "Tanya's Touch" is proof that these guys aren't just about technical facility. Finally, the trio pulls off a lightning fast swing pace on "Lydia's Love Van." Warning: take your vitamins for this one. Only the strong will survive!

| | Night Ranger Midnight Madness CD (1983)
Harem Scarem
$6.35 Night Ranger's 1982 debut, DAWN PATROL, was a surprise success (albeit a moderate one)--due largely to the MTV anthem "Don't Tell Me You Love Me." But it also set the stage perfectly for the massive commercial breakthrough success of their sophomore album, MIDNIGHT MADNESS.
For their second disc, the band streamlined their sound to focus more on the pop side of their ...

| | Queensryche Rage For Order CD (1986) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Harem Scarem
$12.39 With its 1983 self-titled EP and 1984's full-length debut, THE WARNING, Queensryche began as a heavy metal band. But that wouldn't last for long--the members of Queensryche had always been admirers of progressive and art rock, and with the band's third record, 1986's RAGE FOR ORDER, Queensryche began merging its heavy rock with instrumental technicality and modern production techniques. Few other metal bands were challenging their listeners as much as Queensryche, and the group slowly built a hardcore following. Although it wasn't the commercial success that future releases such as 1988's OPERATION: MINDCRIME and 1990's EMPIRE would be, RAGE FOR ORDER is considered to be one of the group's finest by longtime fans.
The album's lone video, "Gonna Get Close to You," is a creepy tale of surveillance that remains one of Queensryche's all-time best tracks (strangely, it's one of the few tracks the group has ever recorded that it didn't write itself). Other standouts include the album-opening story of vampirism, "Walk in the Shadows," as well as such unusually titled tracks as "I Dream in Infrared," "Neue Regel," "Chemical Youth (We Are Rebellion)," and "Screaming in Digital." RAGE FOR ORDER set the stage perfectly for Queensryche's next release, OPERATION: MINDCRIME.

| | Limp Bizkit Results May Vary CD (2003) (Import) Japan
Harem Scarem
$31.55 From the infamous open-call auditions to the eleventh hour recruitment of former Snot axeman Mike Smith, finding a suitable guitarist to replace Wes Borland proved to be a daunting task for Limp Bizkit. Pushing off somewhat from their trademark rap-metal model, the songs that comprise RESULTS MAY VARY display a band reaching musically.
"Gimme the Mic" carries on the spirit the band found success with on SIGNIFICANT OTHER, but the majority of this latest effort finds frontman Fred Durst and company leaning towards a more melodic and musical stance, both instrumentally and vocally. Nods to contemporaries sneak in on "Eat You Alive" and "Down Another Day," (with a clear Tool influence prevailing), and uber-producer Brendan O'Brien mixes in a crisp, biting production. The lyrics to the classic Who track "Behind Blue Eyes" struck enough of a responsive chord with Durst that he was inspired to cover it, going so far as to add an additional verse. Rap metal may be going the way of the dinosaur, but Limp Bizkit seems to have the staying power to carry on.
Fourth studio album from Limp Bizkit & the follow-up to their 2000 release 'Chocolate Starfish & The Hot Dog Flavored Water'. Produced by Rick Rubin, 'Results May Vary' is the first album to feature ex-Snot guitarist Mike Smith who has replaced Wes Borland. Testosterone overloaded rap metal with influences of Korn, Red Hot Chili Peppers & Faith No More. The Japanese edition features 18 tracks including 2 bonus tracks, 'Let It Go' & 'Armpit'. Interscope. 2003.

| | Brian Eno Drop CD (1997)
Harem Scarem
$13.85 On THE DROP, Brian Eno's first non-collaborative full-length work in four years, one of the master sculptors of late Twentieth Century sonic landscapes is once again off on an expedition to discover new moods and textures. Comparatively speaking, each of these seventeen instrumental pieces contains more physical motion than some of Eno's older ambient albums.
Some vignettes are drenched with a computerized soul that is nearly impossible to pin down -- particularly the Eastern-tinged, sorta funky, quasi-hip-hop of "M.C. Organ," and the syncopated rhythms and synth of the indescribably catchy "Swanky." But the THE DROP's standout is unquestionably the closing, half-hour-long "Iced World." With a mid-tempo backdrop of light, bell-like percussion and ...
