Clayton Park is more 1976 than 1999, but it's not Thrush Hermit's fault they were born in the decade they honor here. The album is a vast improvement from the somewhat thick and muddled Sweet Homewrecker -- their dynamic concert performances are perfectly captured on Park, and the slight restraint in their vocals shifts the energy and attention to the music -- a smart move -- which results in a solid, experimental and genuinely captivating record. The heavy, plodding tone that drenched Sweet Homewrecker has been all but replaced with album-rock guitar riffs, catchy midtempos and echoing vocals on tracks like Joel Plaskett's "From the Back of the Film" and his stadium-rock anthem "The Day We Hit the Coast." Rob Benvie's "Headin' South is sneering, pouty punk-pop reminiscent of Television, but he isn't afraid to make a melodic rock anthem like "Western Dreamz" either. Ian McGettigan's "(Oh Man!) What to Do?" is how the Stones should have sounded in the late '90s, and Plaskett's "Oh My Soul!" -- one of Hermit's greatest songs -- is a laid-back, summery Southern rock tribute that would make the Allman Brothers and Lynynrd Skynyrd proud. Clayton Park is Thrush Hermit's best work to date -- and it perfects their hard rock sound while expanding it as well. ~ Gina Boldman

CMJ (2/1/99, p.24) - "The music still bites and kicks...and the big, gold tracks are laced with long, ominous instrumental passages....CLAYTON PARK pops with a coy, dynamic sexiness that's all too rare in white bread alternative music." Thrush Hermit Clayton Park Songs Clayton Park Review

| | Orange Welcome To The World Of... CD (2005) Digipak
Clayton Park music CDs
$11.69 Welcome to the World of. . . Orange, brought to you in Real World fashion by a teen-aged quartet determined to leave their mark for all to see. In best new-school fashion, the group borrow copiously from the past, swearing allegiance to such salubrious heroes as the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and Social Distortion, and proudly waving their flags across their debut disc. A little more uniquely, however, Orange squeeze their influences together, slashing, clashing, and mashing their heroes into the juiciest blends of punk. The Pistols' stomp, the Clash's whooping chords, and Social D's raffing riffs, all whirl across the grooves simultaneously, as bursts of the Heartbreakers, Buzzcocks, the rage of Oi!, and in the case of "Ghetto Blasta," a rhythm reminiscent of Linton Kwesi Johnson are picked up in the gale. But don't let their U.K.-heavy sound and Joe Denman's English-accented vocals fool you, Orange don't hail from that green and pleasant land, at least not anymore. Guitarist Jack Berglund and the singer/bassist may be British-born, but both were raised in Hollywood along with school friend and guitarist Mike Valentine and Texas-born drummer Zak Glosserman. Thus a paean to their hometown appropriately kicks off this set, a not quite jaundiced, but neither glittering, celebration of all that "Hollywood" represents. Beverly Hills 90210 it ain't. Still filled with questions ...

| | Loverboy Get Lucky CD (1981) Bonus Tracks; Anniversary Edition; Remastered
Clayton Park album
$7.59 With their second album, 1981's GET LUCKY, the members of Loverboy followed the famous old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The hard candy-pop direction of their first album is mined once again, but this time the songwriting is even stronger and the sticky sweet hooks somehow catchier.
Besides spawning such radio hits as the uptempo "Working for the Weekend" and "Lucky Ones," Loverboy enjoyed even bigger success thanks to its videos constantly airing on the then-new music television channel MTV. One of the more unforgettable (and now rather goofy) images of early MTV remains Loverboy singer Mike Reno posing for the camera, sporting a headband.
After making a promising start with their self-titled debut, Loverboy hit the big time in 1981 with Get Lucky. This canny combination of AOR hooks and new wave production gloss boasts some memorable radio-ready tunes but isn't as solid an album as its success might lead one to believe. The best tunes on Get Lucky were the songs that became its hit singles: "Working for the Weekend" is a party anthem that blends some gutsy hard rock guitar riffs with a synthesizer-drenched new wave rhythm arrangement to become a huge hit, while "The Lucky Ones" layers clever lyrics about the jealousy that success inspires in others over a song that mixes pomp rock grandeur with a punchy AOR arrangement full of gutsy yet slick guitar riffs. Loverboy got additional airplay with "When It's Over," a moody power ballad that boasts a show-stoppingly emotional vocal performance from Mike Reno, and "Take Me to the Top," a sleek ...
| | Patrick Lentz The P Lentz Project CD (2006)
Clayton Park CD music

With his contagious sound and smooth vocals, Pat shows the energy and power of inspiring solo artist as well as an accomplished band leader with a talented voice and accomplished guitar playing. Pure emotion and passion channeled through his music are shot threw each listener's ears and deep down into the soul."When I write lyrics I try to deal with issues that push the limits of morality and music. Through my experiences, I try to absorb all that is human nature. Life is beautiful both in suffering and joy. I take in everything I possibly can from my perception and those of other people I come across. I have an unsurpassed desire to seek out and understand why people make the decisions they make and the reasons that have influenced the paths they have taken in life." Says Lentz. In his lyrics, Patrick addresses the struggles that young Americans deal with: the threat of ...
