Clayton Park is more 1976 than 1999, but it's not Thrush Hermit's fault they were born in the decade they honor here. The album is a vast improvement from the somewhat thick and muddled Sweet Homewrecker -- their dynamic concert performances are perfectly captured on Park, and the slight restraint in their vocals shifts the energy and attention to the music -- a smart move -- which results in a solid, experimental and genuinely captivating record. The heavy, plodding tone that drenched Sweet Homewrecker has been all but replaced with album-rock guitar riffs, catchy midtempos and echoing vocals on tracks like Joel Plaskett's "From the Back of the Film" and his stadium-rock anthem "The Day We Hit the Coast." Rob Benvie's "Headin' South is sneering, pouty punk-pop reminiscent of Television, but he isn't afraid to make a melodic rock anthem like "Western Dreamz" either. Ian McGettigan's "(Oh Man!) What to Do?" is how the Stones should have sounded in the late '90s, and Plaskett's "Oh My Soul!" -- one of Hermit's greatest songs -- is a laid-back, summery Southern rock tribute that would make the Allman Brothers and Lynynrd Skynyrd proud. Clayton Park is Thrush Hermit's best work to date -- and it perfects their hard rock sound while expanding it as well. ~ Gina Boldman

Welcome to the World of. . . Orange, brought to you in Real World fashion by a teen-aged quartet determined to leave their mark for all to see. In best new-school fashion, the group borrow copiously from the past, swearing allegiance to such salubrious heroes as the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and Social Distortion, and proudly waving their flags across their debut disc. A little more uniquely, however, Orange squeeze their influences together, slashing, clashing,and mashing their heroes into the juiciest blends of punk. The Pistols' stomp, the Clash's whooping chords, and Social D's raffing riffs, all whirl across the grooves simultaneously, as bursts of the Heartbreakers, Buzzcocks, the rage of Oi!, and in the case of "Ghetto Blasta," a rhythm reminiscent of Linton Kwesi Johnson are picked up in the gale. But don't let their U.K.-heavy sound and Joe Denman's English-accented vocals fool you, Orange don't hail from that green and pleasant land, at least not anymore. With their second album, 1981's GET LUCKY, the members of Loverboy followed the famous old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The hard candy-pop direction of their first album is mined once again, but this time the songwriting is even stronger and the sticky sweet hooks somehow catchier.
Besides spawning such radio hits as the uptempo "Working for the Weekend" and "Lucky Ones," Loverboy enjoyed even bigger success thanks to its videos constantly airing on the then-new music television channel MTV. One of the more unforgettable (and now rather goofy) images of early MTV remains Loverboy singer Mike Reno posing for the camera, sporting a headband.
After making a promising start with their self-titled debut, Loverboy hit the big time in 1981 with Get Lucky. This canny combination of AOR hooks and new wave production gloss boasts some memorable radio-ready tunes but isn't as solid an album as its success might lead one to believe.
