| | Little Brother Getback CD (2007)
Vertex songs
$12.29 On Little Brother's third studio album GETBACK, 9th Wonder backs off the boards, producing just one cut and yielding production credits to Illmind, Khrysis, Mr. Porter, Nottz, Rashid Hadee, Zo!, and Hi-Tek. The end result is still an incredibly cohesive LP that relies on elevated lyricism and true-school reverence. Phonte and Big Pooh continue to hone their already-impressive mic skills, deconstructing narratives behind brand name materialism, myths of celebrity glamour, and flimsy arguments that blame hip-hop for society's ills. Lil Wayne, Carlitta Durand, Darien Brockington, Jozeemo, and Dion make guest appearances. GETBACK is another example of innovative hip-hop from one of the underground's most talented acts.

| | Toots & The Maytals Time Tough: The Anthology CDs (1996)
Vertex music CDs
$24.79 Recorded between 1963 and 1988. Includes liner notes by Vivien Goldman.
Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Polygram Studios).
Toots Hibbert has consistently been one of the most popular and influential reggae performers of all time. Hibbert was a favorite of both Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, as well as an influence of '90s performers like Shabba Ranks, not to mention British rockers Pete Townsend and Robert Palmer. This superb compilation spans his entire career, from the uplifting mid-'60s ska of "Never You Change" to the gospel-inflected reggae classic "Pressure Drop" to his '80s tributes to the American soul/R&B sound, covering Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle."
Hibbert's deep, soulful voice, with its slightly ragged delivery, conveys devotion of both the secular and the sacred kind, weaving tales of financial poverty and emotional richness with the fervency of James Brown, Rufus Thomas, and Marvin Gaye. He adapts such unlikely tunes as John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" to the Jamaican experience as effortlessly as he channels Gaye's influence with the original "Spiritual Healing." This wonderfully annotated two-CD set contains some of the best roots-reggae ever recorded.
Additional personnel includes: Carl Harvey, Teenie Hodges, Hux Brown, Lynn Taitt, Rad Bryan (guitar); Roland Alphonso (saxophone); Bobby Ellis (trumpet); Rico Rodriguez (trombone); Ansell Collins, Gladstone Anderson (piano, keyboards); Steve Winwood (organ); Winston Wright (organ, keyboards); Wally Badarou (keyboards, ...

| | Firesign Theatre I Think We're All Bozos On This Bus CD (1971)
Vertex CD music
$10.15 The Firesign Theatre's fourth album cleverly begins with the same sound that ends their third (DON'T CRUSH THAT DWARF, HAND ME THE PLIERS), but it's not a sequel. The marginally more straightforward and linear I THINK WE'RE ALL BOZOS ON THIS BUS takes as its central metaphor those futuristic tram lines that always run through World's Fairs, Disney World, and similar tourist attractions. The main character, another in the Firesign Theatre's long line of Everymen, is a naif called Clem, who wanders haphazardly through the featured attractions of this nameless fantasy land, inadvertently causing confusion wherever he goes. The structure of the story allows for more self-contained, sketch-like pieces that recall the relative simplicity and overt social satire of the group's first two albums, combined with the Joycean free-associative weirdness of the third. As such, it's perhaps the Firesign Theatre's richest ...

Vertex album
$19.55 XFM's Nick Luscombe put together this excellent compilation of 13 tracks by up-and-coming new artists,
The series of six 12"s that make up the "Sky" EPs are all limited edition and have been a great way to introduce new artists to the label. The "Sky" 12" series is now complete and compiling all of the tracks onto one CD seemed like a fitting way to end the series. XFM's Nick Luscombe has always been a great supporter of the "Sky" EPs, and Exceptional releases in general, and so was an obvious choice to ask to ...
