| | Kool Keith Return Of Dr. Octagon CD (2006)
Vertex music CDs
$13.89 Bronx-born rapper Kool Keith has celebrated a more tumultuous career than perhaps any other rapper as prolific as he is, riding career ups and downs that have included stints on major labels and incarceration in mental facilities. But there's no mistaking the former Ultramagnetic MCs frontman in terms of his influence on underground hip-hop. Returning to the personality he co-created in 1996 (with original collaborator Dan "The Automator" Nakamura nowhere to be found), Keith presents the long-awaited second Dr. Octagon album, largely with long-time producer and DJ Kut Masta Kurt.
And with the barrage of different albums he's released in the interim, THE RETURN OF DR. OCTAGON delivers, as promised, a wholly new chapter in the saga of Keith's career. Relying on largely digital production, jumpy backing tracks, and a futuristic vibe that runs common through most of his work, Keith torches other MCs on tracks like "Al Green," "Eat It" (featuring Princess Superstar), and "Ants" (with guest scratching by the Avalanches' DJ Dexter). With seemingly no effort at all, Keith ...
| | Little Brother Getback CD (2007)
Vertex songs
$12.49 On Little Brother's third studio album GETBACK, 9th Wonder backs off the boards, producing just one cut and yielding production credits to Illmind, Khrysis, Mr. Porter, Nottz, Rashid Hadee, Zo!, and Hi-Tek. The end result is still an incredibly cohesive LP that relies on elevated lyricism and true-school reverence. Phonte and Big Pooh continue to hone their already-impressive mic skills, deconstructing narratives behind brand name materialism, myths of celebrity glamour, and flimsy arguments that blame hip-hop for society's ills. Lil Wayne, Carlitta Durand, Darien Brockington, Jozeemo, and Dion make guest appearances. GETBACK is another example of innovative hip-hop from one of the underground's most talented acts.

Toots Hibbert has consistently been one of the most popular and influential reggae performers of all time. Hibbert was a favorite of both Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, as well as an influence of '90s performers like Shabba Ranks, not to mention British rockers Pete Townsend and Robert Palmer. This superb compilation spans his entire career, from the uplifting mid-'60s ska of "Never You Change" to the gospel-inflected reggae classic "Pressure Drop" to his '80s tributes to the American soul/R&B sound, covering Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle."
Hibbert's deep, soulful voice, with its slightly ragged delivery, conveys devotion of both the secular and the sacred kind, weaving tales of financial poverty and emotional richness with the fervency of James Brown, Rufus Thomas, and Marvin Gaye. He adapts such unlikely tunes as John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" to the Jamaican experience as effortlessly as he channels Gaye's influence with the original "Spiritual Healing." This wonderfully annotated two-CD set contains some of the best roots-reggae ever recorded.
Additional personnel includes: Carl Harvey, Teenie Hodges, Hux Brown, Lynn Taitt, Rad Bryan (guitar); Roland Alphonso (saxophone); Bobby Ellis (trumpet); Rico Rodriguez (trombone); Ansell Collins, Gladstone Anderson (piano, keyboards); Steve Winwood (organ); Winston Wright (organ, keyboards); Wally Badarou (keyboards, synthesizer); ...
