Filmed with 14 high-definition cameras and presented in widescreen format and surround sound, Dutch symphonic metal act Within Temptation offers BLACK SYMPHONY, a spectacular visual feast captured here on DVD. Recorded in front of a capacity crowd at the Ahoy, Rotterdam, on February 7, 2008, SYMPHONY sees Within Temptation performing a 22-song set with the renowned Metropole Orchestra and special guests Keith Caputo (Life of Agony), Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering), and George Oosthoek (Orphanage). Within Temptation's most ambitious staging to date, Black Symphony was a unique concert at Rotterdam's Ahoy Arena on February 7, 2008 sold out months in advance. Within Temptation performed to 10,000 fans with the 60-piece Metropole Orchestra and a 20-voice classical choir, as well as on-stage stilt performers, costume changes, and an array of stunning pyrotechnic and lighting effects. Although not as flawless as 1969's WILLY & THE POOR BOYS or 1970's COSMO'S FACTORY, PENDULUM (also released in '70) certainly has its moments. It may only contain one certified hit single (the chugging, melancholic "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?," one of singer/songwriter John Fogerty's best), but both "(Wish I Could) Hideaway" and "Hey Tonight" have become staples on FM classic rock radio over the years, thanks to Fogerty's memorable melodies and inimitably gritty singing style.
Interestingly, PENDULUM is CCR's most ambitious album, with progressive arrangements, instrumentation (including brass and a vocal choir), and a higher gloss to the production. But Fogerty's songwriting is as solid as ever. The album's bluesy opener, "Pagan Baby," with its great guitar riff and tight ensemble playing, remains one of the band's most underrated songs. Though many bands from the post-grunge, alternative-rock boom of the mid-1990s quickly fell by the wayside (remember Sponge or Candlebox?), Canada's Our Lady Peace managed to craft a series of commercially successful albums well into the first decade of the 21st century. Like Matchbox Twenty and Collective Soul, the group has a longevity that can be attributed to a straightforward rock sound marked by catchy pop hooks and emotional, soul-searching vocals, in this case provided by frontman Raine Maida. On 2005's HEALTHY IN PARANOID TIMES, Maida and company strive for the socially conscious urgency of early U2, and this thoughtful approach makes OLP stand out from its peers, particularly on the fast-paced "Where Are You" and "Al Genina (Leave the Light On)," which closes the record in mesmerizingly melancholy fashion.
