It is probably fair to say that Albéniz is the Chopin of Spain, a master of the exquisite miniature. In the hands of Esteban Sánchez, Albéniz has the finest modern interpreter of his music.
The 'Six Album Leaves' are winsome and delicate pieces. The Preludio presents a vast landscape of sound while the slow-moving Tango is an elegant piece, especially in the hands of Sánchez who brings to this music a refreshing degree of delicate restraint. 'Serenata espańola' is another standout that brings to mind Scarlatti filtered through a Spanish sensibility.
