The Land of Rape and Honey represented Ministry's stylistic breakthrough, combining assaultive percussion, samples, synths, and (sometimes) crunching guitars with distorted, barking vocals. For all the emphasis on the group's metal/industrial fusion, it's really only the first three (and best) tracks on Rape and Honey -- "Stigmata," "The Missing," and "Deity" -- that employ guitars extensively. The remainder of the album merely suggests heavy metal aggression through its electronic and sampled elements; it is far more industrial in feel, even though it's just as dark. Ministry was the industrial band that, more than any other, appealed to metal fans, and it was The Land of Rape and Honey that began to lay claim to that status. ~ Steve Huey

Spin (5/01, p.112) - Ranked #43 in Spin's "50 Most Essential Punk Records" - "...Industrial disco for high school stage-crew guys with tab-a-day acid habits....'Stigmata' is the prototype: gigantic metal riffs, pounding drum machines, distorto vox, and war-movie samples..." Q (12/92, p.149) - 3 Stars - Good - "...a relentless swirl of Motorhead meets Metallica--hurtling rhythms, growled vocals and speeding guitar riffs amid a sea of distorting electro-noise and sampled effects...Raw but riveting..." Alternative Press (8/01, p.112) - Included in AP's "10 Essential '80s Albums". Alternative Press (7/95, p.78) - Ranked #12 in AP's list of the `Top 99 Of '85-'95' - "...in the short happy history of industrial rock...there's absolutely no denying that LAND OF RAPE AND HONEY is year zero....A seamless collision of musique concrete, dance music, sampling and heavy metal that expresses the semi-articulate anger of this generation better than any slacker handbook..." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.53) - "[W]ay ahead of its time, marrying repetitive electronics with ultra heavy music." Great! While not as smooth edged as the albums that follow it, The Land of Rape and Honey makes up for it in aggressiveness. Submitted by sp2drkprk (Maryland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
On the Brink of Finding Their Nitch This album is a stark contrast to it's predicessors "With Sympathy", "Twitch", And "Twelve Inch Singles". It has the hint of industrial metal, but not quite the Heavy edge that we know as Ministry now. Al Jourgenson has put together a good set of tunes here, and is just starting to peak his genius at sampleing here. Submitted by a reviewer (Cedar Rapids, IA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Land Of Rape And Honey music CDs
$15.05 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
This disc was released simultaneously with The Original Band, and, like its counterpart, it combines the contents of two Quicksilver albums from the early '80s. If this one is the less-consistently satisfying of the two compilations, it's probably due in part to the stress of a constantly changing lineup -- bassist and singer Lou Reid had left by the time Once & for Always was recorded, and by the following album the entire band was different with the exception of Lawson. There was a slight but noticeable drop in vocal quality during this period; while the ensemble singing is still uncannily tight, no member of the band emerges as an outstanding lead singer. Nor is the song quality as consistent. There are still great moments, such as the ...

| | Dream Theater Live At The Marquee CD (1993) (Import) Germany; Argentina
Land Of Rape And Honey album
$11.79 Recorded live at Le Bataclan, Paris, France on June 25, 1998.
LIVE AT THE MARQUEE is a 1993 live set by Los Angeles-based progressive rockers Dream Theater, featuring "Metropolis."
Dream Theater finally released their first official live album, the double-disc Once in a Livetime (recorded June 1998 in Paris). Granted, the 1995 release A Change of Seasons contained a wealth of live material, but they were all cover songs, and 1994's Live at the Marquee was only available as a European import. With material spanning their entire career, the many die-hard Dream Theater fans will love Once in a Livetime, but it won't win over disbelievers to their highly technical, sometimes cold style. There's no denying that the band's musicianship is top-notch, but the songs often get repetitious and start sounding similar. But Once in a Livetime may be a breath of fresh air if you've had it with smug alterna-wannabes who can hardly play, or if you long for the glory days of Yes or ELP (in other words, the music punk rock tried to annihilate). Highlights include their instrumental tour de force "Ytse Jam," as well as the fan favorites "Pull Me Under," "Lie," "Metropolis," and certain portions of their lengthy "A Change of Seasons" composition. Also released in conjunction with Once in a Livetime was the home video Five Years in a Livetime. ~ Greg Prato
