After achieving considerable success as a dancer and member of popular R&B/rock group Shalamar, Jody Watley staged a spectacular debut as a solo artist with her self-titled album. This set not only scored five hit singles, but also a Grammy for Best New Artist. For a few years, Jody Watley was almost as hot as Madonna, scoring major pop, R&B, and dance hits. Of all her albums, her debut was the most successful (and the most dance-oriented), and produced some of the most memorable dance hits of the decade. Included here is "Lookin' for a New Love," which spent four weeks perched at number two on the U.S. pop charts, as well as the Top Ten hits "Don't You Want Me" and "Some Kind of Lover." However, both those songs were remixed when released as singles -- hence, the versions on this album are inferior to the single mixes (but those versions can be found on her Greatest Hits). Also on this set is the stunning second single, "Still a Thrill," which wasn't a big pop hit, but featured Watley singing in her lower register, and ranks as one of the funkiest and oddest dance tunes of its time. This album also contains another minor pop/R&B hit, "Most of All," as well as a forgotten duet with George Michael (who was also at the top of his game at the time), "Learn to Say No." This album really doesn't possess any duds (or ballads), with other album tracks like "Love Injection" proving almost as infectious as the singles. This album clearly ranks among the artist's best, but if one desires the hit versions of most the singles, then one would be better off with Greatest Hits. ~ Jose F. Promis

5 stars The Album of the year for its time period
One of the most funkiest compilations of music that I have ever experienced, the band that backed Jody Wately up was off the hinges, her agent and choice of direction was on point and concicse,an excellent album ,the mixing and editing in the album is about asgood digitally as you can get....Being that Iused to travel as a roady and was in the sound business in the south and east of the U.S.A.and also done soundproofing & insuillation for 12 years and High Risk Security for bob dylan, howard hewlett&gladys knight, keb mo,& a assortment of other performers & stars...detail & precsion sound was it...Thank You for the great quality of music, and I liked the way yall packaged the CDs,They didnt come with cracked cases, like columbia house or B.M.G....when shipped.......

4 stars Funky 80-'s rhythm
I love this cd!! It's not very easy to find on cd format thoough. Jody has a great funky 80's sound that makes you want to move. I am amazed by her vocal range. From sultry "Still a Thrill" to hip hop "Lookin' For a New Love" she manages to change it up enough to keep you listening to the entire cd.

5 stars The Best
I had this album on vinyl when I was 12 and I played it until the turntable broke. The production was solid and really bought out the best in her voice. A great album through and through. You will not be disappointed.

4 stars Not her best but very enjoyable
In 1987 Jody Watley released her debut solo album "Jody Watley", that went on to sell over five million copies worldwide. This late 80's gem spawned few international hit singles, most notably: "Looking For A New Love" (with famous phrase "hasta la vista baby..."), "Some Kind Of Lover" and "Don't You Want Me", that all hit TOP 10 in US. But "Jody Watley" has much more to offer than just popular singles. Other notable tracks include: pop at its best in "Most Of All" and "For The Girls" as well as red hot disco gem "Do It To The Beat" (that should have been released as a single). But hands down, the best song on the album is "Still A Thrill", that went unnoticed at the time of its release in 1987. It's wonderful dance song, that's recorded in style of Prince's most funkiest singles. Plus, Jody's vocal here is very deep and sexy.
