Donizetti: Don Pasquale / Muti, Freni, Bruscantini, Nucci Classical Review
Customer Donizetti: Don Pasquale / Muti, Freni, Bruscantini, Nucci Reviews
Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars)
Muti Wonderful - Others not so well Don Pasquale, a wonderful, tuneful romp through the early 1800's in Italy. Unfortunately, this recording fails to provide fun and appropriate playfulness. Sesto Bruscantini as Pasquale fails to provide weight or enough buffo to pull this off. He sounds so much lighter than Leo Nucci (Dr. Malatesta) that the only way to tell them apart is Pasquale has the lower notes. Speaking of Nucci, he lacks the lower register brilliance, and always has. His upper range is wonderful but his fioratura is very sluggish. Freni, one of my all-time favorite sopranos is terribly mis-cast. She can turn a phrase and be coy and demure, but lacks the agility and lightness in the upper register to make this soubrette role hers. At times the ensembles sound like early Verdi with her full lyric sound. Gosta Winbergh as Ernesto is the most suited to his role at this point in his career. He later moved into heavier repertoire but in 1984, his vocal timbre is dead on. One only wishes that there was more spinto or mask in his upper range. It can be a little muffled. His pianissimo singing is superb. Riccardo Muti is the star of this recording. His tempi are delicious and the orchestra is brilliant.
