| | Grant Green Solid CD Grant Green Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series. After his untimely death in 1979, Blue Note published a number of Grant Green's previously unreleased '60s recordings. One of these astounding sessions is SOLID, an energetic ... Full Descriptionouting that finds Green leading a large ensemble, including Coltrane band members and Blue Note regulars. Green shows his mettle with fire and precision, his bright, clear tone cutting through the dense sonic backdrop.
The set consists of several intriguing tunes, opening with Duke Pearson's intricate "Minor League," a swinging epic that allows for some powerful blowing, while modal pioneer George Russell's sizzling "Ezz-Thetic" is a fast-paced burner that stretches the group nearly to its limit and offers an engaging harmonic foundation. Green's own "Grant's Tune" and Sonny Rollins' "Solid" are relaxed blues that swing and sway with flavorful statements by all concerned. Joe Henderson's swinging classic "The Kicker," and the Bacharach-David waltz "Wives and Lovers" round out this highly enjoyable session.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on June 12, 1964. Originally released on Blue Note (990). Includes liner notes by Michael Cuscuna.
Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.
Personnel: Grant Green (guitar); James Spaulding (alto saxophone); Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone); McCoy Tyner (piano); Bob Cranshaw (bass); Elvin Jones (drums).

My Favorite Green Album This is one of Grant's most inspired albums and certainly brings the best out in the sidemen Joe Henderson, James Spaulding and McCoy Tyner. Spaulding's soaring phrases compliment Henderson's angular melodies and Green's blues-tinged bop lines. The first tune's my favorite, but each number has a lot of intensity and excitement. I highly recommend this album along with the classic "Idle Moments". Submitted by a reviewer (Oakland, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Chemistry!!!!!! Everyone is focused and electric on this album, McCoy Tyner is Bopping to no end, his comping is amazing as well as his solos, Grant repeats a lot of his signature riffs over and over on this album, but he puts a new spin on them everytime, and he his especially groovy on this date. This is one of the best Grant albums ever. Submitted by Gary (NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Solid album
$10.69 Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster.
Grant Green, Larry Young and Elvin Jones, who would later appear together on Young's classic INTO SOMETHIN' session, gel into cohesive trio on Green's rare TALKIN' ABOUT disc from 1964. The three virtuosos burn brightly from the start as they tackle challenging tunes like the opening "Talkin' About J.C." and "Luny Tune." Also, Green's magnificent lyricism is evident on his beautiful reading of the classic "You Don't Know What Love Is." Two unusual choices for the session, however, are "People," long associated with singer Barbara Streisand, and the Johnny Mercer novelty "I'm an Old Cowhand," both of which get delightful performances here as the trio makes creative use of the well-known melodies. For Green fans, ...
| | Wayne Shorter Etcetera CD (1965) Limited Edition
Solid CD music
$12.15 This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series.
This mid 60's Blue Note date, after Shorter had already joined Miles Davis' great quintet of the time, reflects the saxophonist's expansion into wider realms of composition. After leaving Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Shorter's compositions slowly moved in the direction of the free-flowing, eclectic modal style that would be developed to its greatest degree in Davis' group. Here, however, Shorter's artistic vision is completely his own and his performance displays his unique creativity to the fullest. With Davis bandmate Herbie Hancock (piano), Cecil McBee (bass) and Joe Chambers (drums), ETCETERA is an often-overlooked jewel in the saxophonist's collection.
The restrained title track opens the session with a brilliant yet cautious melody line that Shorter develops into an expressive solo spot, soon to be followed by an explosive statement by Chambers. The dusky ballad "Penelope" follows, gently flowing with burnished tones. The swinging "Toy Tune" is the most traditional sounding piece, but still displays Shorter's unique approach to chord structures and effortless melody lines. Gil Evans' "Barracudas (General Assembly)" creates the ...
| | Grant Green Born To Be Blue CD (1962)
Solid music CDs
$9.75 If there is one thing Grant Green's sound always conveys, it's the blues. On BORN TO BE BLUE Green joins the legendary rhythm players Sonny Clark, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes and the always-spectacular tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec. The date features mostly standards on which Green, Quebec, and Clark delight in tearing up the familiar changes. Quebec particularly shines as he takes as much spotlight as the leader with expertly swinging solos and smoky ballad leads. Green, of course, is in top form, nimbly dancing around his six-string like a featherweight fighter tempting his opponent. Standout tracks include the opening reading of "Someday My Prince Will Come," the unforgettable title tune that features Quebec in one of his most emotive performances, Al Jolson's snappy "Back In Your ...
