(3 Customer Reviews)
This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series.
After his untimely death in 1979, Blue Note published a number of Grant Green's previously unreleased '60s recordings. One of these astounding sessions is SOLID, an energetic outing that finds Green leading a large ensemble, including Coltrane band members and Blue Note regulars. Green shows his mettle with fire and precision, his bright, clear tone cutting through the dense sonic backdrop.
The set consists of several intriguing tunes, opening with Duke Pearson's intricate "Minor League," a swinging epic that allows for some powerful blowing, while modal pioneer George Russell's sizzling "Ezz-Thetic" is a fast-paced burner that stretches the group nearly to its limit and offers an engaging harmonic foundation. Green's own "Grant's Tune" and Sonny Rollins' "Solid" are relaxed blues that swing and sway with flavorful statements by all concerned. Joe Henderson's swinging classic "The Kicker," and the Bacharach-David waltz "Wives and Lovers" round out this highly enjoyable session.

My Favorite Green Album This is one of Grant's most inspired albums and certainly brings the best out in the sidemen Joe Henderson, James Spaulding and McCoy Tyner. Spaulding's soaring phrases compliment Henderson's angular melodies and Green's blues-tinged bop lines. The first tune's my favorite, but each number has a lot of intensity and excitement. I highly recommend this album along with the classic "Idle Moments". Submitted by a reviewer (Oakland, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Chemistry!!!!!! Everyone is focused and electric on this album, McCoy Tyner is Bopping to no end, his comping is amazing as well as his solos, Grant repeats a lot of his signature riffs over and over on this album, but he puts a new spin on them everytime, and he his especially groovy on this date. This is one of the best Grant albums ever. Submitted by Gary (NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

| | Wayne Shorter Etcetera CD (1965) Limited Edition
Solid CD music
$10.09 This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series.
This mid 60's Blue Note date, after Shorter had already joined Miles Davis' great quintet of the time, reflects the saxophonist's expansion into wider realms of composition. After leaving Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Shorter's compositions slowly moved in the direction of the free-flowing, eclectic modal style that would be developed to its greatest degree in Davis' group. Here, however, Shorter's artistic vision is completely his own and his performance displays his unique creativity to the fullest. With Davis bandmate ...

| | Grant Green Matador CD (1964)
Solid album
$8.85 Grant Green recorded so much high-quality music for Blue Note during the first half of the '60s that a number of excellent sessions went unissued at the time. Even so, it's still hard to figure out why 1964's Matador was only released in Japan in 1979, prior to its U.S. CD reissue in 1990 -- it's a classic and easily one of Green's finest albums. In contrast to the soul-jazz and jazz-funk for which Green is chiefly remembered, Matador is a cool-toned, straight-ahead modal workout that features some of Green's most advanced improvisation, even more so than his sessions with Larry Young. Part of the reason for that is that Green is really pushed by his stellar backing unit: pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Elvin Jones. Not only is Green ...
| | Bobby Hutcherson Oblique CD (1967) Remastered
Solid CD music
$8.45 Bobby Hutcherson's second quartet session, Oblique, shares both pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Joe Chambers with his first, Happenings (bassist Albert Stinson is a newcomer). However, the approach is somewhat different this time around. For starters, there's less emphasis on Hutcherson originals; he contributes only three of the six pieces, with one from Hancock and two from the typically free-thinking Chambers. And compared to the relatively simple compositions and reflective soloing on Happenings, Oblique is often more complex in its post-bop style and more emotionally direct (despite what the title may suggest). The latter is especially true on the two opening Hutcherson ...

| | Eric Dolphy Music Matador CD (1998)
Solid music CDs
$9.39 In the spring of 1963, in the last full year of his life, Eric Dolphy recorded nine tracks in New York with producer Alan Douglas. Working with an ensemble that was mixed and matched in different configurations and included Prince Lasha on flute, Clifford Jordan on soprano sax, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Huey Simmons on alto sax, Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone (there was no pianist at the sessions), bassists Richard Davis and Eddie Kahn, and drummers J.C. Moses and Charles Moffett, Dolphy tracked material that clearly anticipated his landmark Out to Lunch album that appeared in 1964 while still providing a bridge to the more traditionally accessible work that preceded it. Dolphy delivered some of the best and most striking work of his career, whether offering full-band treatments of originals like "Iron Man" and "Burning Spear"; giving a loose and lilting calypso feel to "Music Matador"; turning Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz" upside down and sideways; or playing wonderful lines on flute, bass clarinet, and alto saxophone. ...
| | 7 Rivers Path Of Fire CD (2002)
Solid songs
$12.69 To use a hoary old cliché, "you can't tell a book by its cover," and this has never been as true as it is with 7 Rivers. From all appearances, looking at the back cover photo on the band's debut CD Path Of Fire, 7 Rivers would seem to be an arena-rocking metal trio, or perhaps a Southern rock band. Appearances can be deceptive, however, Path Of Fire yielding unexpected musical pleasures. Drummer Mike Boisclair and guitarist Mike Groove formed the New Hampshire band in 2001. Former bandmates, and longtime veterans of the New England rock scene, the two musicians enlisted friend Ted Handrich to handle vocals, and 7 Rivers was formed. As time allowed, the trio worked on Path Of Fire throughout 2001 and early 2002, recording, producing, and releasing the CD themselves.
The musical experience that the members of 7 Rivers bring to bear on the band's work is evident in Path Of Fire, the album is a surprisingly mature and musically complex collection of songs. The bandmembers show a real chemistry, drawing on shared influences as diverse as Pink Floyd, the Moody Blues, and Spirit to create a hybrid of prog rock, British folk, and vintage psychedelica that is pure '70s throwback, but with a contemporary rock edge. Handrich's vocals are rich and friendly, with a dash of Roger Daltrey, a little Justin Hayward, and maybe a bit of Jay Ferguson. Groove's fretwork is fluid, powerful and, when necessary, subtle and melodic, while Boisclair is an ace drummer with a keen rhythmic sense, providing a strong framework for the songs to be built upon.
Groove and Boisclair penned most of the songs on Path Of Fire, but they fit Handrich's voice like a glove. The lyrics are intelligent and thought provoking, not merely a retread of yesterday's romantic obsessions. The passion, the anger, and the insight running through the material is real and heartfelt, not just a fashionable pose, and the band tackles a wide-range of subjects lyrically. Supported by weeping six-string work and mournful vocals, "Halloween" is a lament ...
