EMANCIPATION is Prince's 3-disc declaration of independence from Warner Brothers Records. The artist ammassed reams of new material in anticipation of his "emancipation" from his former label and the creation of his own imprint, NPG Records. His first release for NPG (and, amazingly, his third album of 1996, if you include his soundtrack to Spike Lee's GIRL 6) is a tour-de-force that showcases the breadth and depth of his talents as a composer, vocalist, musician and producer. As usual, the predominant themes are sex and love, the places where they disconnect and the places where they intertwine. "Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife" and "Let's Have A Baby" are evocations of Prince's newfound domestic bliss. "Sex In The Summer" and "Joint 2 Joint" are lasciviously funky tunes that find the bard of the bedroom solidly in his element.
On a 3-disc set, even the prolific Prince can find room for a few covers. The soul gems "Betcha By Golly Wow!" (originally by the Stylistics) and "La, La, La Means I Love You" (the Delfonics) both benefit from a ride on the Paisley Park merry-go-round. More unexpected is the gorgeous treatment of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make U Love Me" and a slightly skewed cover of Joan Osborne's 1996 hit "One Of Us."
Prince's first album after leaving Warner Brothers. Originally released in 1996, this three CD set runs exactly three hours which easily makes it one of the longest albums of all-new original material ever released by a popular artist. Long deleted in the States. Standard triple jewelcase. EMI.

Spin (2/97, p.85) - 7 (out of 10) - "...Love has renewed the musical wit and weird imagination that's always made [Prince] a singular creature. A few songs here might even make the all-time [Prince] mix tape..." Entertainment Weekly (12/13/96, p.82) - "...this three-hour, triple-CD set is somewhat less than the wall-to-wall tour de force our man no doubt envisioned. Which isn't to say that there's not easily, oh, an hour's worth of top shelf material here..." - Rating: B The Source (2/97, p.86) - "...The artist was always many things to many people...EMANCIPATION's 36 tracks explore all the identities..." Musician (3/97, pp.88-90) - "...an operatic depiction of the conflict (or rather, the confluence) between his spiritual quest and his sensual longings and a streetwise expression of indignation as he strives to project and protect his vision....an amazing range of musical styles..." Village Voice (2/25/97) - Ranked #16 in the Village Voice's 1996 Pazz & Jop Critics' Poll.
"His Royal Baddness Strikes Again!" "Emancipation"...Well, this is certainly not a 'new' album, although I have to admit, that I've just purchased a copy (6 months ago, give or take) so this album is still 'new' to me. I followed Prince's career from "For You" to "The Gold Experience" and for some (unknown) reason, I didn't think it was necessary to follow Prince any further (the idea that he could possibly top TGE was to absurd to entertain). I couldn't have been more wrong...Prince is now and forever shall be Prince! This 3 CD Masterpiece (can't think of another word to describe this album) is further proof and testament to the reason that this man is called "The Artist". "Jam Of The Year", "White Mansion", "Right Back Here In My Arms", "Sex In The Summer", "Emale", "One Kiss At A Time", "Style", "My Computer", "La La Means I Love You", "Betcha By Golly Wow", "I Can't Make You Love Me" and the title track "Emancipation" are some of my favorites, but in all honesty I actually like every one of the 36 tracks that make-up this extrodinary piece of work. If you are a Prince fan (as am I) you probably already have this album...But if you don't, well, you can guess what I'm about to say next, so I won't bother. one of his greatest works I first received my own copy in feburary of 1998 thinking it was a bunch of his remakes until i noticed it was new material. All 3 cds are brilliant, but the cd 1 is the best. the tracks on the first cd i absoluty would play whenever i listen to this cd is tracks 1, 2, 3, 8, 10, 11, and 12, on the first cd. what i love about this cd is the hip-hop flavor infused into this cd with the other styles of music prince plays. the beats and music on songs like "mr. happy", "right back here in my arms", "da da da" and "face down" are all greatly hip-hop oriented and the smooth R&B tracks like "i can't make you love me", "somebody's somebody", "friend-mother-sister-lover-wife" and "one kiss at a time" are brilliantly well made. this is one cd that i will always enjoy for the ages whenever i listen to it, the artwork are beautifuly organized and well put together. Overall this is one cd all true prince fans would really want to have in their prince collection. Submitted by vanililli (brooklyn, ny) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
Prince - Breaking Through As a lifetime fan and supporter of Lord Rogers Nelson; aka Prince, I'm pleased, but not surprised by the awesome content of this 3-disc collection of Prince compositions. Prince once said that he maintains a personal Musical Track library of over 25,000 completed songs that he's 100% written, performed, directed and produced, so unlike any other musical star, Prince "releases" various tracks from his vast library to support what's happening in his life at that time to compile material to release a new disc. Emancipation is in my opinion, the most complete example of his continued brilliance. It's the best of any CD released from Prince's long and prosperous career!
