Cézanne's Doubt
$9.75 What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums. Lead vocals are shared by six vocalists, while some of the backing vocals are handled by Savatage lead singer Zachary Stevens. Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a concept album: all the songs are built as chapters of a book, each telling part of a larger story. The plot here is of a young angel sent down to Earth to find and bring back to the Lord "the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel's quest takes him all over the world, through Russia and Sarajevo, until he finally hears the prayer of a father. This last piece is the strongest moment on the album and makes for a miniature story within the larger story. It is basically told in a trilogy of songs: in the first, "Ornament," we hear the father's prayer, explaining how he hasn't seen his daughter in many years. In "Old City Bar," the angel finds the daughter, standing alone outside a bar, and talks to the bartender who, out of a random act of kindness, takes all the cash from his register drawer and gives it to the girl so she can go home. The third song, "This Christmas Day," has the father praising God, thanking him for bringing his daughter back to him on this night of all nights. It is a very touching story, pondering the thought that "If you want to arrange it/This world you can change it/If we could somehow make this/Christmas thing last/By helping a neighbor/Or even a stranger." Musically, the band has taken some traditional Christmas songs ("O Come All Ye Faithful," "O Holy Night," "The First Noel") and mixed in some modern rock mus
| | The Best Of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere CD (2007)
Cézanne's Doubt
$10.49 Issued in 2007, this Andrea Bocelli collection presents many of the Italian classical/pop-crossover artist's most memorable vocal performances. Highlights of the compilation include "Sogno" and "Because We Believe," tracks that fully reveal Bocelli's emotive and resonant voice, as well as duets with Celine Dion ("The Prayer," a delicate ballad) and Sarah Brightman (the wistful "Time to Say Goodbye"). While VIVERE may be a bit too concise for diehard Bocelli fans, it serves as a perfect introduction to the beloved singer.
Classical crossover mainstay Andrea Bocelli's first greatest-hits collection to date, released nearly a decade-and-a-half after he made his album debut in 1994, The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere includes many of his best-known songs plus five new recordings exclusive to this compilation. His international breakthrough album, Romanza (1997), is well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Sarah Brightman on "Time to Say Goodbye." His most successful album, the classical crossover follow-up effort Sogno (1999), is likewise well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Céline Dion on "The Prayer." Later albums Cieli di Toscana (2001) and Amore (2006) are also represented with a couple inclusions on The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere. The five new recordings exclusive to Vivere include "La Voce del Silenzio"; "Dare to Live (Vivere)," a duet with Italian pop star Laura Pausini; "A Te," which features Kenny G on saxophone; "Io Ci Sarň," a David Foster co-write that features Lang Lang on piano; and "Bellissime Stelle." While many of songs compiled on Vivere are no doubt already familiar (if not overly familiar) to Bocelli fans, especially those from Romanza and Sogno, the new recordings are substantial enough to make this compilation a rewarding listening experience for fans regardless of its redundancies. As for neophytes, Vivere is an ideal introduction to Bocelli's classical crosso

Cézanne's Doubt

When Andrea Bocelli lowers his chin and begins to sing, something happens. The very distinctive voice with the slightly reedy middle register is given to tender, almost boyish crooning, then opens up to a golden stage tone and zooms effortlessly into the stratosphere, which is impressive enough, but what really seems to define Bocelli is a certain following of instinct, or a will to do, despite serious training, what he wants to do with his voice, not just what an "opera star" would do in any given musical situation.
Bocelli uses his flexibility to great effect in SACRED ARIAS, whispering his prayers and letting his praises soar, often within the context of a single piece. The recital, as if following a priest's advice at confession, starts with four Ave Marias, the familiar Bach/Gounod and Schubert, along with the one from Mascagni's 'Cavalliera Rusticana' and a pop entry by Steven Mercurio that sounds a bit like Jerome Kern's "All the Things You Are." Other classical favorites include Franck's stirring "Panis Angelicus," Mozart's ravishing motet "Ave Verum Corpus" and, amazingly, "Der Engel" from Wagner's 'Wesendonck Lieder' which may refer to a more earthly kind of angel than the other pieces on this disc.
SACRED ARIAS finds Andrea Bocelli shedding his ultra-romantic persona and instead assuming the garb of the devoted supplicant. With this album, the superstar tenor honors a heritage that dates back to Caruso, whereby the greatest singers of the day would momentarily step away from the earthly concerns of opera and popular music and dedicate their talent to spiritual, worship-oriented recordings. As such, Bocelli lends his distinctive voice and trademark sensitivity to a varied program of contemplative, prayerful selections, including favorites such as the Gounod and
