This Los Angeles-based band features a Cambodian vocalist (she sings in both English and Khmer) and takes as its primary inspiration the Cambodian rock of the 1960s. As there isn't exactly an overload of bands playing retro-psychedelic Cambodian rock in America in the 2000s, Dengue Fever stands out, and especially so with their beautifully realized second album, VENUS ...
| | Francoise Hardy Best Of CD (2000) Import
Le Rital
$12.79 18 track collection of Hardy's years recording for the Vogue label.
Personnel: Françoise Hardy (vocals). As single-disc Françoise Hardy compilations go, this is one of the worst options, for several reasons. Though at a glance its scope might appear wide -- the 18 tracks dating from as early as 1962 and as late as 1989 -- in fact, its range is relatively small, with 11 of the songs dating from 1962-1966, the other seven from 1981-1989, and nothing at all falling outside of those years. If you're going to have a Hardy compilation, better that it focus on one specific decade or narrow year range, since her music in the 1960s was quite different in style (and quality) from her 1980s output. And, most importantly, the 1980s tracks here are far worse than her fine 1960s work (or, for that matter, her 1970s or 1990s work), as in that decade she was just another ...

Le Rital
$9.69 Reissue of this 1989 compilation from the acclaimed Canadian singer songwriter featuring 12 of his early best from 1968-1974. Over one thousand renditions of Cohen's songs have been recorded. He has been inducted into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and is also a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honor. Producers: John Simon, Bob Johnston, John Lissauer. Includes liner notes by Leonard Cohen. Personnel: Leonard Cohen (vocals, guitar). The Best of Leonard Cohen samples 12 of the many highlights from the singer's first four studio LPs. With a heavy emphasis on the debut Songs of Leonard Cohen and its follow-up Songs From a Room, the set includes such masterpieces as "Suzanne," "So Long, Marianne" and "Bird on the Wire," as well as later efforts including "Chelsea Hotel" and "Famous Blue Raincoat." ~ Jason Ankeny The Best of Leonard Cohen samples 12 of the many highlights from the singer's first four studio LPs. | | Noel Coward In New York CD (1957)
Le Rital
$9.19 Personnel includes: Noel Coward (vocals); Peter Matz (arranger, conductor, piano). Recorded in New York, New York in October and November 1956. Originally released on Columbia (5163). Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald. A follow-up to AT LAS VEGAS, Noel Coward's well-received 1955 concert album, IN NEW YORK finds the British showman setting up shop in a Manhattan recording studio. The result is a charming orchestral-pop record that plays up the uber-Englishman's temporary fish-out-of-water status, as best revealed on "I Like America," which features Coward humorously crooning about well-known U.S. locations and their respective stereotypes. ("In Dallas, Tex, they talk of sex, but only think of oil.") For listeners seeking a top-notch latter-day sampling of supreme Coward-ness (see, in particular, the high-society send-up "I Went to a Marvelous Party"), IN NEW YORK easily fits the bill. Noel Coward at Las Vegas, the live chronicle of Coward's engagement at the Desert Inn in the summer of 1955, was a chart LP for Columbia Masterworks, and this studio recording is pitched as its complement, to the point that the record label has taken the cover photograph of the singer, posed in a tuxedo with a cup of tea, standing in the desert, and substituted a New York skyline background to suggest that the same musical approach is being taken. And so it is, minus the applause. Once again, Peter Matz serves ...
