Jazz Hoot/Woody's Winners
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in swing, post-bop, and romantic styles) with his avant-garde leanings is evident here. "Odessa," for example, a modal exploration, begins melodically, yet pushes further into free-jazz territory as the tune progresses. The angular bop of the title track is offset by adventurous soloing and unique instrumentation (flute and tuba add to the sonic palette here, along with guitarist James "Blood" Ulmer and drummer Jack DeJohnette). Blythe also knows how to keep things groovy, as the Latin-infused "Down San Diego Way" shows, with its interlocking ...

Jazz Hoot/Woody's Winners
$31.59 Gary Burton's DUSTER, released in 1967, was an early foray into jazz fusion, predating even Miles Davis's FILLES DE KILIMANJARO and IN A SILENT WAY. Burton's multi-mallet vibes attack is as sharp as ever, but it's the presence of rock-influenced guitarist Larry Coryell that gives the disc its ...

Jazz Hoot/Woody's Winners
$13.15 Doug Forshey hails from Huntington County, Pennsylvania where he grew up listening to a wide variety of music from Roger Miller and Merle Haggard to Pink Floyd and Tom Petty. At age 15, he started his own band and performed a mixture of original and cover songs at clubs and bars all over the state of Pennsylvania. In 1995, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a songwriting career and signed a publishing deal with Best Built Songs. Doug spent the next few years honing his craft, performing at many songwriting venues in Nashville, including the Bluebird Café and Douglas Corner Café. As a songwriter and co-writer, Doug has had his songs recorded by many independent artists from all over the country. During his time at Best Built Songs, Doug had recorded a number of original demos and work tapes. But in 2005, he decided it was time to get back to his roots as a performing artist and record an “official” album. He began working with co-producers Tim Grogan and Rod Lewis at Studio 515 in Nashville. This resulted ...
