There are at least two types of traditional bluegrass performers today. There are those who approach it retrospectively, mimicking Flatt & Scruggs and other bluegrass forefathers. Others play the old style as though there were no other. Keith Little falls into the latter group. He has a voice -- as the saying goes -- that takes you way back. On Distant Land to Roam, he is joined by bluegrass alumni such as vocalist Claire Lynch and mandolinist Mike Compton for a relaxed, nicely delivered set. The original "Weary Ol' Highway" is sung from the experience of someone who has spent a number of years on the road, while "Where Dear Friends Will Never Part" has a sprightly rhythm that sways the listener like a summer breeze. A number of songs like the title cut and "Lonesome Road to Travel" revolve around being on the road, away from home and weary of it all. This gives the album a nice unity. Robert Gateley and Lynch add harmony on a number of cuts, greatly enriching the choruses of songs like "Please Come Back Little Pal" and "Home on the Highway." There are also lovely versions of "Before the Prairie Met the Plow" and "Been All Around this World." Little has performed with everyone from Ricky Skaggs to Tim O'Brien, and this experience has served him well. On Distant Land to Roam he takes the spotlight, showing himself an equal of his bluegrass peers. This album will be warmly appreciated by fans of traditional bluegrass music. ~ Ronnie D.
