Kicking Woman Singers: Pikuni Style album. Newby's solo return after a four-year absence, Sirens is an immersive collection of ambient and environment electro-acoustic music with strong though restrained Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian influences. Newby intertwines a number of wordless vocal sources with drones, sparse percussion, and contributions on harp, rebab, bull fiddle, and didgeridoo from an assembly of guest artists. A strong, consistent album. ~ Sean Cooper

Kicking Woman Singers: Pikuni Style CD music. St. Gregory I (pope from 590-604) codified chant in the liturgy because he saw it as a reflection of the divine. For him, plainsong was to be used to communicate with God and to create a state of beatitude. The musical tradition that grew up around chant is now more accessible than ever due to advances in ethnomusicology and a revival in antiphonic singing.
On GREGORIAN GARDEN, there are two long and stunning tracks dedicated to bringing the monastic tradition into the listener's own living room. Lengthy intervals of nature sounds segue into chant then back into nature again. This repeats over and over in a measured but seamless fashion. (Each track is over 25 minutes long.) Birdsong, buzzing bees, trickling streams, the rustling of leaves, and distant church bells combine with the reverberant chanting of monks. This creates a euphonious and consonant musical fabric. Most of all, the music and nature sounds heard here promote stillness and solemn contemplation. In general, this CD really captures the calm atmosphere of life at a monastery or hermitage.
