Lots of hand-clapping, hands-to-the-Heavens praise with this album, but the music inevitably wears out its welcome after about the 25th repetition of any given song's chorus. Fourteen tracks, most of which was composed by Carr, showcase his troupe's solo talents fairly well. But the truth is, they lack harmony when they split into parts. It's not exactly tuneful. However, for die-hard black gospel fans, this may fit the bill. ~ Dacia A. Blodgett-Williams

In 2 the Future music CDs. The curious title of Carla Bley's 2007 release THE LOST CHORDS FIND PAOLO FRESU is meant quite literally, since Bley's quartet the Lost Chords recruited Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu for the sessions. Fresu's clear, lyrical tone perfectly complements Bley's gorgeous compositions and the playing of saxophonist Andy Sheppard, drummer Billy Drummond, and bassist Steve Swallow. The wittiness of titling six tunes after bananas ("One Banana," "Two Banana," etc.) belies the depth, complexity, and pure lyrical beauty of the music.

In 2 the Future album. While the band is only three people, the Reverend himself is undeniably a big man with a big voice, and THE WHOLE FAM DAMNILY is as big as the Indiana prairies the band is from originally. With the Reverend playing impressively quick-fingered guitar, his wife Breezy on the washboard, and his brother Jayme on drums, it's truly a family affair. Plain-spoken, unfussy country blues about what the Reverend sees outside of his window today ("Your Cousin's On COPS," "Walmart Killed the Country Store") show a real sense of humor while keeping that rural melancholy firmly in place.
