Sonic Circuits VIII
$9.19 Since Chris Young appeared on the "Nashville Star" television program in 2006, he's been on a roll. After signing with RCA he had a hit with "Drinkin' Me Lonely," his first single from his self-titled debut recording. Likewise, the two singles that have preceded the release of THE MAN I WANT TO BE in 2009 haven't done too badly either, getting plenty of play on radio. While Chris Young's sound is firmly in the contemporary country camp, it's also a lot more hardcore honkytonk than it is the refried '70s rock clichés that plague the genre. Part of that is due to his big booming baritone voice that rings as clear as a bell in this mix. (Think George Strait-meets-Josh Turner.) The other part of his appeal is the use of a relatively small group of musicians, giving the disc a more organic sound than a lot of what's out there. Young also has a lot of respect for tradition: "Rose in Paradise" is drenched in fiddles, mandolins, and acoustic guitars. It's a country-styled blues and features no less than Willie Nelson as a duet partner. The final track on the set is a moving cover of Tony Joe White's "Rainy Night in Georgia." Its beauty lies in its arrangement; his reading of this classic ballad is utterly tender and believable, accentuanted by a sparse, stripped-down production. And rather than stick with his trademark baritone, he stretches his vocal range--including a mean falsetto--to the brink and still pulls it all off.

Sonic Circuits VIII
$18.95 Artemij Vedel (1767-1808)- eminent Ukrainian composer. He was a brilliant conductor, singer (tenor), violin-virtuoso and musical teacher. So much talent for one person and for one to filled with tragic fate. At the age of 32, and full of creative thought, experience and knowledge, he was imprisoned in a madhouse, where he spent nine horrible and horrific years. His life ended aged 41, yet the tragedy of the artiste lasted long after his death as publication and performance of his work was forbidden. 50 years after his death saw his first condensed biography and centuries later, the first publication of his works. This short revival and renaissance quickly reversed almost a century of official isolation, this time under the Communist Soviets (USSR).With regret the creative legacy of Vedel was not preserved in its totality. Known are the sections relating to – 28 Spiritual Concertos, 2 Divine Liturgies, the All Night Vigil and separate creations based on canonical texts. Their stile was formed on the intermissions of baroque, classical and pre-romanticism tendencies, thus formulating a complex synthesis, which clearly experiences the senses and influence of traditional Ukrainian and Western-Europian music. Vedel’s creations differentiate themselves through their unity of word and music, melodic sincerity, rhythmic complications, multi-layered textured and techniques, refine perfection of small form, and yet with it – define the mastery and monumentality of his choral scoring and writing. On ...
