| | Jim McNeely Group Therapy CD Jim McNeely Discography of CDs
GROUP THERAPY was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.
GROUP THERAPY finds Jim McNeely fast becoming the premier big band arranger of his generation. The pianist offers up eight compositions, each invoking the rich possibilities of large-ensemble jazz. Not technically a big band, this top-flight tentet has the improvisational latitude of a combo, yet in McNeely's hands, they have the have all the muscle of a 17-piece jazz orchestra.
We hear five McNeely compositions on GROUP THERAPY. In addition, "The Fruit" by Bud Powell, "Village Blues" by John Coltrane, and the Green/ Heyman standard "Body and Soul" all receive fresh reworkings here. Clearly though, it is the title track that embodies the concept of this album. The idea on this track was to structure a musical conversation (or confession) between the musicians. This created an environment that encouraged more relaxed and animated improvisations. Acting as moderator, McNeely governs the overall movement of the piece through his deft arranging skills. A unique musical exploration, GROUP THERAPY is one of McNeely's best to date.

Group Therapy CD music
$15.39 "The Chairman of the Board" died in May of 1998, yet his music sounds as vital and relevant today as ever. Released on the 10th anniversary of his death--in coordination with a slew of DVD releases commemorating the singer's acting career as well as an official U.S. Postal Service stamp--NOTHING BUT THE BEST provides an excellent look at Sinatra's tenure at the Reprise label. Among the album's 22 vintage cuts are classics such as "The Way You Look Tonight," "Luck Be a Lady," "Strangers in the Night," and "My Way." The disc also contains a bonus track in the previously unreleased recording ...
| | Peter White Playin Favorites CD (2006)
Group Therapy music CDs
$9.29 For his tenth full-length album, Playin' Favourites, British smooth jazz giant Peter White decided to, as the title suggests, turn to some of his favorite tracks from the '60s, '70s, and '80s, giving each of them his own interpretation (he did a similar thing in 1994's Reflections). Working with longtime producer Paul Brown, as well as musicians Boney James, Rick Braun, and Dave Camp, among others, White successfully turns the 11 songs on Playin' Favourites into instant crossover jazz hits. Mainly this means adding horns and keyboards to the background while the guitarist lithely moves around from the melody into lush improvisationally based solos, rendering them much slicker and smoother than they were before (although granted, he didn't have to do much to turn Bacharach's James Bond classic "The Look of Love" into something so adult contemporary). For many of the songs White chooses, the arrangements, albeit a bit sugary, transfer well, and create very soothing, clean pieces of music that could be used in any setting where being inoffensively unmemorable is a priority. But for his version of ...

$10.79 With former leader Tom Scott gone on to a solo career, the L.A. Express regrouped, bringing in David Luell as a replacement on saxophones. The result was this satisfying batch of original material, cut from the same mold as the band's recordings with Scott. Interestingly, this album may be the most enjoyable the band recorded, ...
| | Herbie Hancock Gershwin's World CD (1998) Sacd Hybrid
Group Therapy CD music
$15.89 GERSHWIN'S WORLD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. "St. Louis Blues" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s).
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
The epitome of a 20th Century musician, Herbie Hancock has always traversed wildly divergent stylistic paths, finding his way easily into jazz, funk, fusion, dance-pop and more. His ability to make valid individual statements in all these genres is part of what makes his compositions and performances so rich. So it doesn't seem at all incongrous for Hancock to interpret the work of George Gershwin, redefining much of the Gershwin canon in the process (with assistance from some world-class compatriots). Hancock's stated aim for GERSHWIN'S WORLD is to get inside the pieces, illustrating their essence rather than knocking off rote versions of these standards. Towards that end, "St. Louis Blues" is transmogrified by the soulful ...

| | Buddy Rich Legendary: 1946-1948 CD (1998)
Group Therapy songs
$13.39 Drummer Buddy Rich is heard leading his own ensembles on 21 postwar big-band recordings compiled in this second volume of his collected early works, released in 1998 by the Hep record label. This terrain has been traversed by the Classics Chronological Series as well; the two series make for an interesting comparison. Perusal of the collective personnel reveals the presence of several individuals destined for progressive careers in early modern jazz; these include saxophonists Hal McKusick, Warne Marsh, Jimmy Giuffre, and Al Cohn, as well as vibraphonist and future bandleader Terry Gibbs. Vocals are by Dottie Reid and arrangements are credited to Jimmy Mundy, Neal Hefti, and Johnny Mandel. ~ arwulf arwulf

| | Roy Campbell Ethnic Stew And Brew CD (2001)
Group Therapy CD music
$13.09 World music has been a major influence on Roy Campbell; so it isn't surprising that the chance-taking trumpeter/flügelhornist would call this 2000 session Ethnic Stew and Brew. Leading his cohesive Pyramid Trio -- which also includes bassist William Parker and drummer Hamid Drake -- Campbell combines mildly avant-garde jazz with African, Asian, and Middle Eastern elements. One of the more African-influenced tracks is "Amadou Diallo," an emotional piece that was inspired by the tragic shooting of an African immigrant in New York in the late '90s. (Diallo was shot 41 times by NYPD officers, who assumed he was reaching for a gun -- however, the immigrant turned out to be unarmed.) Meanwhile, "Impressions of Yokahama" has a strong Japanese flavor and features Parker on the shakuhachi -- a bamboo flute that has been used in traditional Japanese music for centuries (although the instrument was actually brought to Japan by the Chinese). While Ethnic Stew ...
