Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot, Dan Hersch, and Ken Perry.
There are two ways of looking at Rhino's Girl Group Greats. First, you could argue that it's unnecessary, since every one of its 20 cuts is known (and probably owned) by girl group collectors. Second, you could argue that it's absolutely necessary, since every one of its 20 tracks forms the essential foundation for a girl group collection. And that's probably the best way to view the collection, since it summarizes all the girl group hits from the early '60s, including cuts from Motown and solo cuts that fit the musical definition, even if they aren't by groups. So, this turns out to be a nearly impeccable collection of early-'60s pop, as not one of these 20 songs could qualify as anything less than indispensible (with the possible exception of Joanie Sommers' "Johnny Get Angry," which still stands as a great artifact of its times). Ultimately, this isn't an album for collectors, but rather something for a listener wanting an immediate immersion into the best of girl groups, and this functions flawlessly. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

It's no secret that one of the most powerful weapons in Zappa's arsenal was his sense of humor, which was at its height in live performance. Consequently, there's no better way to get a feel for the full scope of Zappa's music than on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE. This set finds Frank at his mid-'70s peak, ...

| | Catherine Tuttle What They Will Find CD (2005)
Girl Group Greats
$15.75 Catherine Tuttle kicks off What They Will Find with the bouncy title track, at once establishing herself as a contemporary folk-pop artist in the mode of Sarah McLachlan with a lively performance style. The arrangement, a combo of electric guitar, keyboards, and even, toward the end, strings, is nicely done. It's an ambitious start, followed by "Free Bird," which rocks a bit harder. The lyric about a caged bird being set free may be a bit typical, but thanks to the bright production and upfront vocal it never sounds like a New England songwriter beating one over the head with an important lyric. The remainder of the album, while solid enough, doesn't quite maintain this level. And while What They Will Find has much to recommend it, it doesn't quite reach the level of the sum of its influences (McLachlan , Tori Amos, and Jonatha Brooke) at their best. Still, the album's ability to marry singer/songwriter lyrics with a pop sound make the songs very accessible. It doesn't hurt at all that she's an expressive singer who doesn't over-sing. Certain tracks, like "Restless," too closely resemble her influences (McLachlan in this case), so it's a relief when ...

Prior to attending NCSA he studied voice, composition and piano at Pfeiffer University. He received a scholarship through the NC School of the Arts Foundation to spend a summer studying at The Dartington International Summer School of Music in Devon, England. His composition teachers have included Sherwood Shaffer, David Ott, Leo Arnaud, Neil Hefti, Bruce Broughton and Fred Steiner. He is a member of BMI and the American Composer's Forum.Marc's Homeland for orchestra has been well-received over the past 15 years. The solo piano piece, "Middle Earth" was premiered in the U.S. by the composer. A U.K. performance followed by pianist Andrew Ball. Of the U.K. performance, The London Guardian said, "...the Hollywood impression's ...
