(5 Customer Reviews)
This is one in an ongoing series of thoughtfully compiled and well-annotated collections released in conjunction with the Deep Purple Appreciation Society: a scorching presentation of two concerts recorded for the BBC by Purple Mark II. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore is at the top of his game on disc one, recorded in 1970, unleashing some of his most stunning playing, especially on the extended instrumental "Wring that Neck." He's intense and unfettered, but always in control, through blindingly fast passages and quiet sections as well. Jon Lord on organ gets in some good soloing too, especially on "Mandrake Root." The 1972 concert on disc two, on the other hand, is more a showcase for the whole band as a band, and it's excellent. Recorded just before the release of Machine Head, it features most of that album's songs, including the only known live versions of "Maybe I'm a Leo" and "Never Before," and finishes by rocking the house with a cover of Little Richard's "Lucille." The original version of this album was released in 1980; this upgrade features two extra tracks and improved sound. Even though they contain many of the same songs, In Concert makes an excellent companion to Purple's classic live album Made in Japan (which has also been upgraded by EMI) -- and not just for collectors. ~ Stephen Raiteri

| Deep Purple In Concert 1970/1972 Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) WOW! If only I could have been there! This 2 CD set captures Deep Purple during their most aggressive and inspired period. These are 2 concerts, one from 1970 and one from 1972, at the BBC studios. Just wait till you hear guitarist Richie Blakemore on "Wring That Neck"! Whoa! The guitar hero was clearly ON throughout these shows. Every solo is packed with end-of-the-earth excitement as he lays claim to the throne of rock guitar king! I mean it jumps right off of the CD into your living room. It's not as polished as the "Made In Japan" album (which is probably technically their best live effort) but it's fresh and frenetic energy makes it almost, I mean ALMOST, MIJ's equal. The difference is that they take chances here. And because of DP's high stake risks there are rich rewards. You can FEEL the magic, these CD's ROCK! "Speed King" opens the collection with a bang and pretty much tells you you're in for a wild ride. If you like Deep Purple's, especially the Mk II lineup, you MUST get this one! IF THIS ISN'T IN YOUR LIBARY "YOU MUST GET IT" This cd is just another example of hard rock at it's finest. DEEP PURPLE what can i say they simple are one the best rock and roll bands of all time, and this album cements it. This album ranks right up there with "Made in Japan" and all their other live albums as one the best. The whole band is just in fine form From first note to the final curshing cord this album DELIVERS blood pumping, foot stomping rock and roll. You get all the classics from speed king to mandrake root from highway star to smoke on the water to lazy (just an incredible verision) and a few rare tracks that will just blow you away. If this cd isn't in your libary "YOU HAVE TO GET IT, THIS IS A MUST HAVE". I listen to it all the time and it keeps getting better and better, cudo's to Blackmore, Gillian, Glover, Lord, and Paice. Over 2 Hours of Full-Throttle Scorching Intensity This may be blasphemous, but I think this album is BETTER than Made in Japan. While the sound quality is not as good, the performances are tighter and more consistent and in my opinion the jams are more focused and interesting. The song "Wring That Neck" has to be one of the greatest "live" guitar performances in rock history, if not THE best. Blackmore just grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go for 18 minutes of stunning, blistering guitar soloing which will leave you in a sweat and your spine rubbery. And the rest of the album is just as intense, energetic, and hard- rocking. Some of the best "live" versions of Purple's most recognized songs are all here: Speed King, Lazy, Child in Time, Strange Kind of Woman, and Highway Star all rank among the best versions of these songs. And Purple's cover of Lucille here is by far the best version of this song I have ever heard by anyone. This is a MUST not only for Purpleholics but for any fan of hard rock, especially those who appreciate improvisation, jamming, and instrumental interplay rather than the boring note- for- note carbon- copies of studio versions of songs like so many rock bands perform "live." BLOW YOUR FACE OUT INTENSITY I've been waiting for this to come out on CD.
I've had the album for years and I wore it out. This CD contains the finest version of SPEED KING that I've heard. Blackmore and Paice just smoke through this song. Excellent CD. Go buy it. Submitted by a reviewer (cleveland, ohio,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Raw Deep Purple I bought this album because I wanted to hear more music from Deep Purple's classic second lineup. While the sound quality on this release isn't as good as other Deep Purple live albums (such as Made In Japan), the music is just as good. In fact, some of the live recordings here are my favorite versions of some songs. Deep Purple is full of raw energy, and you can really hear it throughout the songs on this album. Deep Purple In Concert 1970/1972
$15.15 "E-Pro" kicks off the festivities with a heavy guitar riff and a Beastie Boys-sampled beat, while "Que Onda Guero" revels in a sunny Latin vibe, with Beck rapping (surprisingly well) in Spanish. However, this outing also offers up MUTATIONS-worthy melodic pop, particularly on "Girl," a brilliantly catchy tune carried along by acoustic guitar, handclaps, and lush vocal harmonies. Beck's reunion with sound sculptors Mike Simpson and John King (the Dust Brothers) breathes plenty of life into these tracks, including the heavily percussive "Black Tambourine" and the '70s-inspired "Earthquake Weather." Jack White (of the famously bass-less White Stripes) lends a bluesy bass line to "Go It Alone," while many of Beck's longtime musicians (guitarist Smokey Hormel, bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen) turn up throughout the record. An album that features Beck energetically jumping back into his renowned cut-and-paste aesthetic, GUERO is sure to please longtime fans, and may win over young listeners who thought that he was primarily a sad-sack folkie.
Ever since his thrilling 1994 debut with Mellow Gold, each new Beck album was a genuine pop cultural event, since it was never clear which direction he would follow. Kicking off his career as equal parts noise-prankster, indie folkster, alt-rocker, and ironic rapper, he's gone to extremes, veering between garishly ironic ...
