Sonatas 2 & 6 Classical Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Mea Culpa........Read On I had submitted a previous review of this recording, and gave it 2 stars. I have taken the time to re-listen this CD several times recently, and have to admit to a previous tin ear! The piano sound is well recorded, and Ms. Damien really plays with verve, sharpness and bravado. Why didn't I like it before? Fatigue? I'm picky about Prokofiev piano, and cannot abide a limp-wristed account...this decidedly is not! The two sonatas are very well played, especially Sonata No.2. The Sarcasms are played with a different stress and emphasis than I like, but I have to say they are very listenable. This is now being given 5 stars to average out to 3 1/2 stars, which is where the recording more likely belongs. If this is your introduction to Prokofiev piano music, you will not go wrong. Apologies to Ms. Damien for my previous negativism. Submitted by Poppynogood (Iowa City, IA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Prokofiev: Okay..........But!!??!! Marie-Noelle Damien couldn't have picked a bigger headache for her first recording than Prokofiev's piano music. This has always seemed to me to be big and muscular music with sharp edges, tough rhythms and a musical line not very easy to pick out. Damien does play well, but only well. There is a great deal of competition out there in this music, and she simply doesn't qualify. Add to that a really dopey cover art (with the cover art reproduced on a seperate interior card; just in case you fell in love with it I would suppose), and a translation on the biography of Damien apparently done by computer and you have a non-starter in this CD. Sample: "She had a perfect hearing and disposed about a remarkable innate velocity." HUH??????? Save your money and put it into Barbara Nissman's wonderful recordings of nearly the entire ouvre of piano music (Pierian Label, available via CDUniverse). $27.79 This CD is European export.Moscow born and trained pianist Elena Kuschnerova, currently living in Germany, is the last discovery of Harold Schonberg (1915-2003), the former chief critic of the New York Times, and the only performing artist affiliated with great and controversial Russian composer Alexander Lazarevich Lokshin (1920-1987). She seems to be the only musician having its own Internet radio that hosts her entire output. An independent classical musician, she is pursuing an impressive concert and recording career on her own. Elena released 8 solo piano CDs and 2 chamber-music CDs on different labels. In addition, many of her live recordings are available as digital downloads in her own downloads shop. CD offered on this page has been recorded at the SWR radio station in Baden-Baden and released by the German label Ars Produktion. It contains all Stravinsky's piano solo output except for his early piano sonata. In particular, "Trois mouvements de Petrouchka" is marked by fluidity and genuine Russian spirit. It is a story-telling and not merely a technical display piece. Harold Schonberg, the chief music critic of New Yourk Times and a famous author on pianists, praised this CD and her Scriabin CD on Ars Musici in two reviews in the American Record Guide. About ...

Sonatas 2 & 6
$20.29 NOTES ON THE MUSICIANS AND THE MUSICEnsemble Gaudior is dedicated to performing masterpieces of chamber music from the Baroque and Classical eras, using instruments from those periods or careful modern copies. By presenting this repertoire to modern concert audiences, we hope to contribute to the process of moving our world toward greater harmony. (The name Gaudior is borrowed from the musical unicorn in Madeleine L'Engle's book A Swiftly Tilting Planet, who time-travels through the universe, joyfully harmonizing with the music of the stars and planets.) Founded in 2000 and based in the Washington, D.C., area, the group is built around a core instrumentation of violin and basso continuo, but frequently collaborates with guest artists in order to allow a greater variety of repertoire. Additional information is available at ensemblegaudior . Alexandra MacCracken, the founder and director of Ensemble Gaudior, has performed as a baroque violinist with the Washington Bach Consort, Opera Lafayette, and Modern Musick, as well as with other period-instrument ensembles in Richmond, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and New York. Before moving to the Washington area she taught at the University of Virginia, where she also played in the Piedmont Chamber Players, a faculty ensemble. Other highlights of her extensive experience as a chamber musician include membership in the Squareknot Quartet, whose repertoire ranged from the classics to innovative arrangements in popular, folk, and jazz styles; and more recently in the baroque groups La Stravaganza and Harmonia Nova. The holder of both bachelor's and master's degrees in music from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, Ms. MacCracken currently freelances on modern as well as baroque violin and in addition occasionally finds time to play Renaissance consort music on the treble viol. Her chief end in presenting the concerts at which these recordings were made can be summed up in J. S. Bach's motto "Soli Deo Gloria": to celebrate, glorify, and enjoy God forever, who included music among all the gifts of creation.
