Wu-Tang Clan member RZA produced, mixed, and arranged the GHOST DOG album, the soundtrack to the 1999 crime-drama film starring Forest Whitaker
This Japenese edition of the soundtrack features more songs from the movie than the U.S. version, and includes cuts from RZA and Wu-Tang Clan.
What could be more appropriate for a movie about the super-warriors of the Far East than a soundtrack put together by Wu-Tang Clan founder/member RZA? The GHOST DOG soundtrack is another gem from the Shaolin genius. Here he produces, writes, performs, and collaborates with other Wu members to lend the film its diverse musical landscape.
"Strange Eyes" rocks steady with a phat blues-guitar-and-organ loop, while Sunz of Man, 12 O'Clock, and Blue Raspberry hold down the rhymes. "Stay with Me," a soulful expression of urban loneliness, pairs 12 O' Clock with Melodie. One of the hottest tracks on the soundtrack is "Cakes," featuring Kool G Rap and RZA on the mic. Other tracks worth checking out include RZA's collaborations with Black Knights ("Zip Code"), Masta Killa & Superb ("The Man"), and Tekitha ("Walkin' Thru the Darkness," where RZA takes you on a '70s-soundtrack trip). The GHOST DOG soundtrack is a must for loyal Wu-heads, and "Fast Shadow" even reveals a special Wu-Tang Clan surprise.
Japanese pressing soundtrack of the 1999 film directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Forest Whitaker with different tracks than the U.S. including cuts by Wu Tang Clan and RZA that are not in the movie. JVC. 2001.

Rolling Stone (5/11/00, p.128) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A marriage of integrity and uncontrived beauty....[RZA] reminds listeners of the head-nodding power of his anti-pop hip-hop, of the muted but urgent, hypnotic pull of his artistic handiwork. It's a stellar return to form." Entertainment Weekly (4/14/00, p.75) - "...Sometimes edgy, sometimes ethereal melange of raps, loops, and attitude, with samurai philosophy tossed in." - Rating: B CMJ (7/00, p.52) - "...Strings, soul, raga and hard-edged, Clan-style beats show why the soundtrack was the true star of director Jim Jarmusch's feature film..." The Source (5/00, p.230) - "...RZA's snaky, soulful and unmistakably baroque beats evoke a suitably Asiatic underworld vibe....he finds the perfect screen for his Technocolor textures, making this the ideal musical companion to the film." Melody Maker (5/2/00, p.49) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Yeeah! Nihilistic hip-hop soundtrack, Wu-Tang everywhere, people slicing each other into pink coleslaw with sharp things!...RZA-sharp." NME (Magazine) (3/25/00, p.41) - 8 out of 10 - "...In the absence of nu Wu proper, this is really ideal....Stand-out tracks include the top 'Cakes', by Kool G Rap featuring RZA and Wu-Tang's 'Fast Shadow'..."
