LOVE IS LIVE won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Gospel Choir Or Chorus Album.
If this wild, energetic Sunday morning tour de force from Brooklyn's Love Fellowship Tabernacle doesn't get you feeling spiritual (or at least a bit giddy), not much will. The arrangements of these mostly upbeat handclappers are unique in the way they balance the men's and women's choirs for certain emotional emphases, but there are also standout solo performances by Denise Heyward ("You Have Been Right There") and Kirvy Brown ("Lord Do It"). These songs all feature familiar upbeat themes about grace and redemption, but the power of these voices brings fresh emotion, which makes every word a unique revelation. Most gospel choir albums go from vocal to vocal, but any regular churchgoer knows sometimes the most musical fun comes from the band just riffing (organ in the crazy lead, of course). The title "Praise Break" sounds kind of quiet, but it's a wild jam that blends rock and R&B/gospel in a swirling circus of sounds. A lot of gospel choir recordings sound the same, but this one stands out brilliantly from the pack with an energy that just doesn't let up. ~ Jonathan Widran

| | 6T'S Rhythm & Soul Society: In The Beginning CD (2005)
Love Is Live! music CDs
$14.55 Vintage soul music has long had a more welcome home in the United Kingdom than in the United States, where collectors and rabid fans have built a cottage industry out of trading and reissuing vintage R&B sides both famous and ridiculously obscure. Ady Croasdell and Randy Cozens are two British soul mavens who launched a "Rhythm 'n' Soul" club night in London in 1979, which has been continuing in one form or another ever since. Designed to replicate the mod-era dance nights that featured a wide variety of dance-friendly R&B sounds rather than just the Northern soul material that dominated the U.K. R&B scene, the club night's popularity led to Croasdell compiling a series of soul anthologies for the British Kent label, and with this set he goes back to the club dances that helped inspire it all. Croasdell's 20-page liner essay on the history of the 6T's Rhythm 'n' Soul Society will be tough going for most American readers (and more than a few in the U.K.), since it deals more with rivalries between different packs of soul fans, club licensing laws, and the layouts of the various venues that hosted his dates than the actual music, but the ...

$34.29 Destroy Rock & Roll presents another success story in the genre of bedroom electronica. Isle of Skye's Myles MacInnes recorded this debut album entirely at home with relatively basic computer software, and the resulting 14 tracks are every bit as compelling as contemporaneous efforts from like-minded electronic artists Daft Punk, Lemon ...
