Fusion album
$13.05 Lisa Shaw's solo full-length debut is a collection of smooth, sophisticated R&B laced with electronica. Shaw is as expert at negotiating the seamless textures of the romantic "Dim Light" as she is at interpreting the quirky techno of "Born to Fly," but she sounds most at home singing over the down-tempo dance groove of "Let It Ride" or the old-school rhythms of the title ...

| | Otis Redding In Person At The Whisky A Go-Go CD (1968)
Fusion music CDs
$7.39 Originally released on Atco (33-265). Includes original release liner notes by Pete Johnson.
When Otis Redding played L.A.'s Whisky A Go Go in the spring of 1966, crossover fame was still awaiting him at the Monterey Pop Festival the following summer. This didn't keep a vociferous following (including Bob Dylan and his entourage) from filling up the club to experience the charismatic Redding. Backed by an anonymous band that included a seven-piece horn section, the soulful Georgian opened the set with a rip-snorting version of his "I Can't Turn You Loose," (which the Blues Brothers appropriated as part of their theme over a decade later).
He kept the juices flowing with piston-pumping covers of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," giving James Brown a run for his money. Redding's gruff voice caressed "Mr. Pitiful" and manhandled the self-penned "Respect" (which Aretha Franklin scored a hit with the next year.) But it was on slower numbers such as the yearning "These Arms Of Mine" where Redding dug deep for the pathos and pain that made him such a soul icon.
Recorded live at the Whiskey A Go Go, Los Angeles, California on March 31, 1966.
Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch.

| | Ahmad Jamal Live At The Pershing & The Spotlight Club CD (1996)
Fusion songs
$12.79 Though he was somewhat eclipsed by the shadows of Bill Evans and McCoy Tyner, Ahmad Jamal was one of the most tasteful and influential jazz pianists of the 1950s and '60s. His light, classically-influenced touch and his ear for gorgeous, chamber-like arrangements influenced many of his contemporaries (most notably Miles Davis), and these qualities can be heard even in Jamal's early recordings.
Though not released until 1996, this very fine 15-track set brings together some live recordings from 1958. The set list comprises standards--"But Not for Me" and "Moonlight in Vermont" are both treated here--and songs from ...
