The science-fiction thriller MINORITY REPORT, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, is based on a short story by renowned writer Philip K. Dick. Chinese pipa player Liu Fang had been living in Canada for less than a year when she recorded this beautiful solo set for the Montreal-based Oliver Sudden Productions. The pipa is a traditional Chinese string instrument, four-stringed, pear-shaped and resembling a lute, although there is more space between the frets and fretboard to allow the player to apply perpendicular pressure to the string for microtonal effects, something typical of Far-Eastern string instruments. It gives it that special Oriental "twang." Otherwise it sounds much like a lute with something of the banjo's dryness and finger-picking technique (but not that metallic). Liu chose her program from the authentic traditional and "modern traditional" repertoires. The disc begins with Hua Yan-jun's "The Great Wave Washes the Beach," one of the classic pipa compositions of the 20th Century, a gracious, evocative tune. But the highlights are found in Zhen Qi-ren's "Melody from a Bamboo House" and Wei Zhong-le's "The Moon Is High." The first one is a contemporary piece that, despite its respect for musical tradition, takes matters deeper into complexity and originality. In Liu's interpretation we hear her complementary interests in traditional and innovative musics. The second is at least a millennium old and calls for wide amounts of virtuosity through its 13 minutes of duration. The way the basic themes are ornamented seem to reflect the structure of nature or -- as it would be called much later -- fractal geometry, producing endless fascination. Born in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China, and graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Liu Fang is a very promising young pipa virtuoso now residing in Montreal (Quebec), Canada. She started learning the pipa at the age six and began an impressive performing career as a pipa soloist when she was 11 years old. She performed for festivals and concerts across China and had the honour to play pipa solo for Queen Elizabeth during Her Majesty's visit to China in 1985. She toured Japan in 1986. Liu Fang won numerous prizes at provincial and national Chinese music competitions such as the first prize for pipa at the National Youth Competition held in Sichuan in 1988. At the age of 15, she successfully enrolled into the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and studied the pipa under Professor Ye Xu-Ran, pipa master, educator and composer. As her second ...

Jody Grind's personnel changed substantially between the recording of their first album, 1969's One Step On, and their second and final one, 1970s Far Canal. Tim Hinkley was still on keyboards, but there was a new guitarist, Bernie Holland (who also did some singing), as well as a new drummer to complete the trio, Pete Gavin. As expected, the sound of the group, while still in the early British serious progressive rock bag, changed as well -- sometimes for the good, sometimes for the worse. The jazzy inclinations of the debut were mostly gone, save the atypically tasteful instrumental "Ballad for Bridget." On "We've Had It" and parts of "Vegetable Oblivion," there was a classical melodic influence that was more accessible than anything on the first album, as well as somewhat more in line with what groups such as Yes were doing, though Jody Grind were far less cheerful.
