Some people claim that ragtime, not Dixieland, was the first form of jazz, but most jazz experts disagree -- and rightly so. If you believe that improvisation is a fundamental part of the genre, you can't call ragtime jazz because it isn't improvisatory. Nonetheless, serious jazz historians should hear authentic ragtime because it influenced early Dixieland (as did the blues, marching bands, classical, Latin, and Caribbean music), and Swedish pianist Lars Edegran's New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra (NORO) was among the more authentic ragtime bands of the 1960s and 1970s. This reissue, which contains 18 recordings from 1967-1970, demonstrates that NORO was quite faithful to the spirit of 1900s and 1910s. Several Scott Joplin classics from that era are performed (including "Elite Syncopations," "Scott Joplin's New Rag," "Pleasant Moments," and "The Chrysanthemum"), along with numbers by such greats as Joseph Lamb ("Reindeer Rag," "Ethiopia Rag") and James Scott ("Sunburst Rag"). Grace and Beauty is easily recommended to ragtime enthusiasts, and even though it isn't jazz, the CD is also recommended to jazz fans who would like to hear some of the instrumental music that influenced early Dixieland. ~ Alex Henderson
NORO was organized in 1967 by pianist Lars Edegran, who became interested in playing ragtime music after finding a great number of orchestrated turn-of-the-century rags in the John Robichaux Collection at Tulane University's Archive of New Orleans Jazz.

BROKEN ARROW was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
BROKEN ARROW is the third straight album on which Neil Young has splattered loud electric-guitar notes all over his folk-rock melancholy. You'd have to go back to Young's amazing mid-1970s records to find a similar streak, and you'd have to go back just as far to find Young in a groove this consistent, this good. In his '90s incarnation, Young seems to be upping the ante each go-round. It's as if he's completely enveloped in his own noise, and taking great pleasure in seeing just how much he can get away with. The first three songs on BROKEN ARROW are nearly a half-hour long between them, and they reach that length through long, scratchy, meandering solos that evoke both jazz and punk-rock (think Sonic Youth) in their simultaneous bid to be transcendent and noisy. In "Loose Change," Young solos for a miraculous six-and-a-half minutes over a single chord.
By the end of the third song, Young appears emotionally spent, desperate to break the mood. The second half of BROKEN ARROW consists of comparatively light and compact ...

These harmonies are woven to create a sound all its own. The vocal harmonies have a meaning themselves, blending with the music in a Beach Boys style. Yet, refreshingly you'll hardly find any "love songs" here; the lyrics focus primarily on life issues. The group is the brainchild of Ryan Chisholm, whose vision seeps through the songs. He records and produces the music and instruments (minus the drums), as artists like Trent Reznor. Ryan layers the songs with details and intricacies that keep you ...
