If Snoop Dogg's debut, Doggystyle, doesn't seem like a debut, it's because in many ways it's not. Snoop had already debuted as a featured rapper on Dr. Dre's 1992 album, The Chronic, rapping on half of the 16 tracks, including all the hit singles, so it wasn't like he was an unknown force when Doggystyle was released in late 1993. If anything, he was the biggest star in hip-hop, with legions of fans anxiously awaiting new material, and they were the ones who snapped up the album, making it the first debut album to enter the Billboard charts at number one. It wasn't like they were buying an unknown quantity. They knew that the album would essentially be the de facto sequel to The Chronic, providing another round of P-Funk-inspired grooves and languid gangsta and ganja tales, just like Dre's album. Which is exactly what Doggystyle is -- a continuation of The Chronic, with the same production, same aesthetic and themes, and same reliance on guest rappers. The miracle is, it's as good as that record. There are two keys to its success, one belonging to Dre, the other to Snoop. Dre realized that it wasn't time to push the limits of G-funk, and instead decided to deepen it musically, creating easy-rolling productions that have more layers than they appear. They're laid-back funky, continuing to resonate after many listens, but their greatest strength is that they never overshadow the laconic drawl of Snoop, who confirms that he's one of hip-hop's greatest vocal stylists with this record. Other gangsta rappers were all about aggression and anger -- even Dre, as a rapper, is as blunt as a thug -- but Snoop takes his time, playing with the flow of his words, giving his rhymes a nearly melodic eloquence. Compare his delivery to many guest rappers here: Nate Dogg, Kurupt, and Dat Nigga Daz are all good rappers, but they're good in a conventional sense, where Snoop is something special, with unpredictable turns of phrase, evocative imagery, and a distinctive, addictive flow. If Doggystyle doesn't surprise or offer anything that wasn't already on The Chronic, it nevertheless is the best showcase for Snoop's prodigious talents, not just because he's given the room to run wild, but because he knows what to do with that freedom and Dre presents it all with imagination and a narrative thrust. If it doesn't have the shock of the new, the way that The Chronic did, so be it: Over the years, the pervasive influence of that record and its countless ripoffs has dulled its innovations, so it doesn't have the shock of the new either. Now, Doggystyle and The Chronic stand proudly together as the twin pinnacles of West Coast G-funk hip-hop of the early '90s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Long Beach, California's Snoop Doggy Dogg made one of the most successful debuts in rap music with DOGGYSTYLE. Introduced on the Dr. Dre single "Deep Cover," Snoop gained further popularity with his smoothed-out gangsta-type flow on Dre's THE CHRONIC. His music has ruled the clubs and the airwaves ever since, and the fact that his Dr. Dre-directed video "Murder Was The Case" was extended into an 18-minute feature-length film with its own soundtrack is further proof of just how much pull Snoop has in the hip-hop nation.
Having super-producer Dr. Dre behind the scenes guaranteed DOGGYSTYLE a top ten spot on the pop charts. Singles like "Gin And Juice" and "Who Am I (What'sRolling Stone (5/13/99, p.73) - Included in Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the 90's."
Rolling Stone (1/27/94, p.51) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...DOGGYSTYLE is filled with verbal and vocal feats that meet its three-mile-high expectations....DOGGYSTYLE speeds through 55 minutes of constant talk as if on a suicide hot line...."
Entertainment Weekly (12/10/93, pp.74-75) - "...[DOGGYSTYLE] is the most limber, low-rider gangsta album to date...it's easy to be impressed one moment and appalled the next..." - Rating: B-
Q (2/94, p.95) - 3 Stars - Good - "...when this funky/sleazy trick works, it is the very best that modern pop has to offer..."
Vibe (2/94, p.103) - "...Snoop is good, no doubt about it. His cool, lazy drawl is unique, evocative, rhythmically complex--the perfect foil for Dre's thick, tense beats...The big story on THE CHRONIC was Snoop stealing Dre's thunder; on DOGGYSTYLE, Dre snatches it back...."
The Source (2/94, p.67) - "...[Snoop] emerges as an MC who lives up to all of his advance hype...."
Melody Maker (12/11/93, p.28) - "...The music is sumptuous, soulful and genuinely menacing....Snoop Dogg is the real McCoy...."
Musician (2/94, p.69) - "...[DOGGYSTYLE] succeeds on its own terms ...[Snoop's] the gangsta Marvin Gaye of Dr. Dre's Motown. It's the clever interplay of `hard' and `soft' which keeps some of these tracks alive; sweet harmonies blossom in the middle of brutal rhythm tracks...a funky, multifaceted album...."
NME (Magazine) (12/4/93, p.26) - "...Masterminded by Dr. Dre's faultless production, DOGGYSTYLE is both a wonderfully comic splurge of Parliament funking and barely suppressed violence..."

With its stylish, sonically detailed production, Dr. Dre's 1992 solo debut, The Chronic, transformed the entire sound of West Coast rap. Here Dre established his patented G-funk sound: fat, blunted Parliament-Funkadelic beats, soulful backing vocals, and live instruments in the rolling basslines and whiny synths. What's impressive is that Dre crafts tighter singles than his inspiration, George Clinton -- he's just as effortlessly funky, and he has a better feel for a hook, a knack that improbably landed gangsta rap on the pop charts. But none of The Chronic's legions of imitators were as rich in personality, and that's due in large part to Dre's monumental discovery, Snoop Doggy Dogg. Snoop livens up every track he touches, sometimes just by joining in the chorus -- and if The Chronic has a flaw, it's that his relative absence from the second half slows the momentum. There was nothing in rap quite like Snoop's ...

**WE'RE COMIN' TO LA! SAT. MAY 3RD @ THE WHISKY A GO GO!!**Saturated in New York City for a couple years now, Ashley 1st is quickly carving a name for herself after the release of Sony BMG's "Christmas Classics: Yesterday , Today & Forever" album, on which she lends her own saucy twist of "Santa Baby" to the company of Destiny's Child, Christina Aguilera, and Jessica Simpson to name a few, to the ACQB chart climbing success of her single "You're Just So Good" from her debut album: Lovin' Every Minute (iTunes, cdbaby.com). "Ashley 1st ROCKS with a sound all of her own!!" - Kevin Wyatt (Bass Player; Lenny Kravitz) ...which may be why her single "You're Just So Good" soared to 13 on the ACQB Charts. With a sound that crosses Alicia Keys over a Rolling Stones ride, it's no wonder Ashley 1st and her original songs pack a punch on stage with the team of assasins she rolls: Bass-Gary Pickard, Drums- Benjamin Woodbury, Guitar- Sergio Ortega, Saxophone-Michael Seropyan, Keys- Dominic Fallacaro. "Everybody's felt like shouting after a first kiss, or groaning after a break up- and with me those emotions are always accompanied by a song. I write songs as they happen to me, or as life hands them to me." Ashley 1st writes songs that express what we've all felt at one point or another because "love is the great equalizer." "Lovin' Every Minute" covers all those emotions and more. The ...
