| | Heptones Mr. T CD Heptones Discography of CDs
Mr. T was recorded in 1991 by the second incarnation of the Heptones (Barry Llewellyn, Earl Morgan, Naggo Morris), and while it has some bright and intriguing tracks, it fails to rise to the level set by the group's original lineup with Leroy Sibbles (keep in mind that Sibbles, aside from being a fine lead singer and writer, is also a dynamite bass player -- a mighty key instrument in Jamaican music). That said, this album fares better than many of the Heptones' post-Sibbles releases, with Morris stepping to the plate with two fine compositions, "Where Good Music Gone" and the soulful and passionate "In My House," while Llewellyn scores with the hopelessly infectious "Rasta Music." Unfortunately most of the album -- despite the presence of ace Jamaican session players like Sly & Robbie, Willie Lindo and Vin Gordon -- has a sort of slick, processed feel that became endemic to reggae in the 1990s. The songs mentioned above go a long way to redeeming things, however, and dedicated Heptones' fans shouldn't hesitate to check them out, although casual listeners will probably be better served by sampling the classic 1970s work done by the group's original lineup. ~ Steve Leggett
Personnel includes: The Heptones, Sly & Robbie (Sly Dunbar & Robbie Shakespeare).

An interesting collection of singles and posthumously archived material created in the same way as Hendrix's CRASH LANDING and The Beatles "Free as a Bird," (albeit with most of the original musicians), CONFRONTATION is more consistent than one would expect and includes at least one certified classic in "Buffalo Soldier." The record features ...

Mr. T album
$21.45 Released by the U.K.-based Soul Jazz in 2001, Studio One Rockers is an excellent introduction to the mighty Jamaican label's undeniable strength and depth. Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's outlet as a producer and label head is paid due here, combining the well-known with the unknown so fluidly that some dedicated fans might be hard-pressed to separate the classic from the unearthed. Not only do you get the 15 fantastic songs -- which flow with the greatest of ease from roots to ska to funk to rocksteady to dub -- but you also get a hefty booklet, which contains an exhaustive interview with Dodd that recalls the days he spent spinning records at his mother's Kingston restaurant. Regrettably, there's zero recording information about the tracks, but that fault falls in line with the majority of reggae reissues. To look on the bright side, it almost adds to the mystique. Differing from most compilations of any genre, this isn't ...
| | Dave & Ansel Collins Double Barrel CD (1972)
Mr. T CD music
$10.45 This 2002 anthology from sibling reggae artists Dave and Ansel Collins includes their hit "Double Barrel" as well as group and solo performances from the late 1960s and early '70s.
As its plethora of tracks makes clear, this Double Barrel is not the original 1971 album, nor even an enhanced version chock-a-block with bonus tracks. In fact, this set gives short shrift to Dave & Ansel Collins as a unit; but there again, they were a manufactured entity and a short-lived one at that. Instead, this Double Barrel rounds up a slew of their individual releases from the reggae age. As the new sound took hold, Dave Barker was working his way round the studios, cutting a steady stream of singles. The yipping DJ/sweet soul singer recorded a clutch of songs for Lee Perry, many of which are included on this set, along with the Duke Reid produced "On Broadway" and a glorious cover of "Just My Imagination," which teamed him with singing producer Lloyd Charmers. As a part-time member of ...

Mr. T album
$34.95 This version of T.O.K.'s UNKNOWN LANGUAGE includes the extra cut "This Is How We Roll."
T.O.K. enjoyed a lot of breakout success in 2001 with their My Crew, My Dawgs album, which was exceptionally popular in the U.S. for a dancehall album, perhaps because it was so poppy. This was prior to Sean Paul's truly massive breakout in 2003, remember, so T.O.K.'s success is all the more remarkable in retrospect. By the time the group returned in 2005 with Unknown Language, however, the dancehall craze ignited by Sean Paul's "Get Busy" and its Diwali riddim had subsided quite a bit, supplanted by the reggaeton craze led by Daddy Yankee and his breakout "Gasolina" single. Not that T.O.K. cared either way, though (even if fans might have, given the long four-year wait). Trend or no trend, wait or no wait, their second album picks up right where their first one left off, with another large serving of catchy dancehall-pop well engineered for both dancing and singing along to. Highlights are plentiful here on Unknown Language, much as they had been on My Crew, My Dawgs. The album-opener, "Hey Ladies," gets the party started right from the get-go. And T.O.K. don't relent from there on, with numerous other standout songs sequenced early, most notably "Fire Fire" (a real barnburner with an appropriate title), "She's Hotter" (a Pitbull ...
