Delius: Orchestral Works
$24.45 In an era where it's not uncommon for a superstar act to wait three or four years between releases, it's astonishing to realize that Carole King wrote and recorded a strong follow-up to 1971's bazillion-selling TAPESTRY that was released before the year was up! MUSIC was a big commercial success, but anything would pale next to the ecstatic commercial response to TAPESTRY, which was still high in the charts when this follow-up was released. The generically-titled MUSIC didn't spawn any hits as big as "It's Too Late" or "So Far Away," but with several decades' hindsight, it's clear that TAPESTRY was no fluke; in its more low-key way, MUSIC is every bit as fine an album. Highlights include two jazz-tinged tracks, "Brother Brother" and the waltz-time title track, which features a remarkable saxophone solo by Curtis Amy. "Growing Away From Me" and the mournful "It's Going To Take Some Time" are closer to TAPESTRY's introspective tunes. As on that album, King includes an old Goffin-King classic, a thoroughly reworked "Some Kind of Wonderful."
This is a 12-track collection from pop songwriting icon Carole King.
This Japanese edition reissue is digitally remastered.
Japanese DSD digitally remastered re-release.
Personnel: Carole King (vocals, keyboards); James Taylor (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Danny Kootch (guitar); William Green, William Collete, Ernie Watts, Plas Johnson, Mike Altschul (flute, woodwinds, saxophone); Curtis Amy (flute, tenor saxophone); Oscar Brashear (flugelhorn); Ralph Schuckett (keyboards); Charles Larkey (bass); Joel O'Brien, Russ Kunkel (drums); Abigale Harness, Merry Clayton (background vocals).

| | Walker Brothers Ultimate Collection CD (2008)
Delius: Orchestral Works
$11.89 This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known songs, which were not their first two U.K. singles -- occupy the opening two slots on disc one. So this set is lacking in some attributes that one would, ideally, like to se. On the other hand, all of the songs that one would like to see are here somewhere, and the annotation is thorough if not extensive. For anyone starting a collection of the classic Walker Brothers' material, this set -- which also carries the subtitle "My Ship Is Coming In" -- is a great place to start and finish, assuming that one doesn't wish to own everything that they did during their British period. ~ Bruce Eder
2009 two CD set from the '60s trio, who have become one of the most revered Pop outfits of their time. Though they were not brothers and came from California, The Walker Brothers became international stars with a slew of great singles that were as unique as they were catchy. The British and European audiences were (and remain) their most devoted fanbase, although other countries have come around to The Walker Brothers special kind of magic in recent decades. 36 tracks including 'Make It Easy On Yourself', 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore' and many others. Universal.
| | Blues, Blues Christmas Vol. 2 CDs (2005)
Delius: Orchestral Works
$16.39 Christmas and the blues might seem at first like a strange combination, given that the music of the holiday season is usually joyful, hopeful, and bright, but no other time of the year is so good at showing you what you don't have, and what you can't get, and if you have the blues at Christmas, well, it's going to be a pretty heavy dose. This generous two-disc set from Document Records features 52 tracks of vintage African-American Christmas-themed blues and gospel pieces (with a couple of street sermons thrown in) recorded between 1925 and 1955, ranging from down-and-out laments and jailhouse moans to surprising (and occasionally risqué) requests for what Santa can bring down the chimney. Highlights on the first disc include the opening track, the joyous "Christ Was Born on Christmas Morn," recorded in 1925 by comedian and female impersonator Frankie "Half Pint" Jaxon; Harry Crafton's "Bring That Cadillac Back" (a Cadillac might not be the best gift if your girlfriend likes to ramble) from 1947; Tampa Red's amazing, ringing slide guitar tone on "Christmas and New Year's Blues" from 1936; and the bizarre, disturbing field recording of "Junior's a Jap Girl's Christmas for His Santa Claus," sung by Willie Blackwell for Alan Lomax in Arkansas in 1942. Other high points include the charming "Christmas Boogie," recorded in 1950 by piano prodigy (he was only ten years old when this recording was made) Frankie "Sugar Chile" Robinson and the intense, bottled-up street-corner sermon "The Wrong Way to Celebrate Xmas," recorded by Rev. Edward Clayborn in 1928. The second disc yields even more holiday gems, including the bottleneck guitar attack of Black Ace (Babe Karo Lemon Turner) on 1937's "Christmas Time Blues (Beggin' Santa Claus)"; Leroy Carr's stark and brilliant "Christmas in Jail" from 1929; a breezy, bouncing "When Jesus Was Born" by gospel harmony quartet the Sons of Heaven (who were really the Selah Jubilee Singers doing a little moonlighting -- which they did often
