Also available in a 3-pack with THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD and ALL IN ALL.
The follow-up to the band's breakthrough album THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD, 1976's SPIRIT builds on Earth, Wind & Fire's signature blend of funk, jazz, and smooth soul. An ambitious record, SPIRIT successfully captures what Earth, Wind & Fire were all about--the melding of a wide range of musical styles with a positive and self-aware philosophy.
Though the band had experienced difficulties when producer and arranger Charles Stepney died halfway through the sessions for SPIRIT, the progressive funk workout "Getaway" (one of the album's highlights) was a runaway R&B hit. High tenor vocalist Philip Bailey is featured on the romantic ballad "Imagination" and on the shimmering title track. "Saturday Nite" brings things back down to street level with its solid funk grooves, while "Biyo," an instrumental with a jazz-like structure, gives the group's musicians plenty of room to stretch out. The gospel-inspired "Burnin' Bush," which showcases the group's renowned vocal leads and harmonies, rounds out this fine release. (Note: The 2001 edition of SPIRIT features five bonus tracks.)

Principally recorded at Wally Heiders, Los Angeles, California. Live bonus tracks recorded at Hollywood Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California on February 11, 1978. Includes liner notes by William C. Rhoden.
GRATITUDE, recorded during Earth, Wind & Fire's 1974-1975 American tour, is an impeccably recorded live album. Given the band's knack for improv jamming and altered songs, you can be sure you won't be hearing studio tracks with a crowd dubbed in.

Originally released in 1977, ALL IN ALL shows Earth, Wind & Fire breaking out of their previous funk/R&B mold and incorporating touches of world music to their sound. The result is a landmark album that sounds just as fresh more than 20 years later. A visit to Argentina and Brazil helped Maurice White and the gang inject some new influences into the recording of ALL IN ALL.
Opener "Serpentine Fire" is highlighted by Maurice's Latin percussion arrangement. ...
| | Earth, Wind, And Fire Need Of Love CD (1971)
Spirit music CDs
$6.09 The ambitions of Earth, Wind & Fire only increased after their stellar debut, and the group brought an abstract sense of composition to their sophomore record, The Need of Love. The opener, a ten-minute piece named "Energy," is proof enough, with several extended passages inspired by everything from free jazz as well as in-the-pocket funk like Kool & the Gang. The next song up, "Beauty" is also positive and intriguing, though in an overly similar groove as "Fan the Fire" from the first album. The closer, a cover of Donny Hathaway's gloriously funky "Everything Is Everything," does justice to the original (and that's saying a lot). Compared to the debut, The Need ...

| | Crunk & Disorderly: Leaders Of The New South CD (2003) Edited
Spirit CD music
$14.65 This compilation brings together some of the most popular hardcore hip-hop artists from the South, including Ying Yang Twins, Lil Jon (generally acknowledged as the King of Crunk), and David Banner. CRUNK & DISORDERLY is somewhat akin to an audio version of the film SCARFACE: It's a nonstop in-your-face journey through the darkest, most violent, sociopathic aspects of the gangsta aesthetic. Not only do you find the likes of Pastor Troy and Lil Flip rapping about shooting anybody that gets in their way, you actually hear the gunshots. The inclusion of two Christmas-oriented tunes amid all the purposeful nastiness might at first seem like a humorous anomaly. Ultimately, though, it just underlines the degree to which the hardcore topics addressed on CRUNK & DISORDERLY merely represent another day on the job for rappers as inured to the mean streets as Killer Mike, Youngbloodz, and other self-professed thugs.
Crunk and Disorderly rounds up some of the Dirty South's hottest rappers circa 2003, compiling an assortment of largely unexceptional yet largely unreleased material that should interest diehards and those looking for a general down-South sampler. Some of the more noteworthy names offering unreleased tracks here include Lil Jon & the East Side Boys ("What You Gonna Do"), Lil' Flip ("Throw Up Yo' Hood"), Pastor Troy ("I'm Outside"), Three 6 Mafia ("Nan Notha"), YoungBloodZ ("All Pro"), T.I. ("Turn It Up"), and Trina ("Get Loose"). In addition, there are a few holiday-themed inclusions: Ying Yang Twins ("Ho! Ho!"), Bone Crusher ("Guess Who's Comin to Town"), David Banner ("It's Christmas Time [Jingle Bells]"), and Killer Mike ("A Christmas Grind"). And the collection concludes with Lil Jon's "Throw It Up" remix featuring Young Buck of G Unit. It's a mighty rowdy conclusion, and undoubtedly the best inclusion here. On the whole, however, Crunk and Disorderly doesn't offer too much that measures up to the quality of "Throw It Up." In fact, most everything here is marginal at best, especially the holiday songs, which are novel yet nonetheless unexceptional. ...
