(4 Customer Reviews)
Also available in a 3-pack with THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD and ALL IN ALL.
The follow-up to the band's breakthrough album THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD, 1976's SPIRIT builds on Earth, Wind & Fire's signature blend of funk, jazz, and smooth soul. An ambitious record, SPIRIT successfully captures what Earth, Wind & Fire were all about--the melding of a wide range of musical styles with a positive and self-aware philosophy.
Though the band had experienced difficulties when producer and arranger Charles Stepney died halfway through the sessions for SPIRIT, the progressive funk workout "Getaway" (one of the album's highlights) was a runaway R&B hit. High tenor vocalist Philip Bailey is featured on the romantic ballad "Imagination" and on the shimmering title track. "Saturday Nite" brings things back down to street level with its solid funk grooves, while "Biyo," an instrumental with a jazz-like structure, gives the group's musicians plenty of room to stretch out. The gospel-inspired "Burnin' Bush," which showcases the group's renowned vocal leads and harmonies, rounds out this fine release. (Note: The 2001 edition of SPIRIT features five bonus tracks.)

Spirit
$6.85 This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
Principally recorded at Wally Heiders, Los Angeles, California. Live bonus tracks recorded at Hollywood Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California on February 11, 1978. Includes liner notes by William C. Rhoden.
GRATITUDE, recorded during Earth, Wind & Fire's 1974-1975 American tour, is an impeccably recorded live album. Given the band's knack for improv jamming and altered songs, you can be sure you won't be hearing studio tracks with a crowd dubbed in.
From the supersonic rumblings of "Africano/Power" to the soul sing-along "Devotion" to the percussive party jam "Sun Goddess," all the signs of a classic live album are here. An almost nine-minute version of "Reasons" shows the soloing talents of the musicians. "New World Symphony" is an epic jazz number. Studio tracks recorded after the tour are also included, such as the perfect pop ditties "Sing a Song" and "Can't Hide Love." This re-release also contains a live bonus medley from a 1978 Natalie Cole TV special. With a running time of over 70 minutes, R&B lovers should give GRATITUDE for this release.

Spirit
$6.79 Also available in a 3-pack with THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD and SPIRIT.
Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
Originally released in 1977, ALL IN ALL shows Earth, Wind & Fire breaking out of their previous funk/R&B mold and incorporating touches of world music to their sound. The result is a landmark album that sounds just as fresh more than 20 years later. A visit to Argentina and Brazil helped Maurice White and the gang inject some new influences into the recording of ALL IN ALL.
Opener "Serpentine Fire" is highlighted by Maurice's Latin percussion arrangement. "Fantasy," which features Philip Bailey's soaring vocals, is simply one of the great funk songs of the era. "Jupiter" features a tight, blasting horn section. "I'll Write a Song for You" is a smooth ballad with tender harmonies and strings. The album concludes with a live version of "Brazilian Rhyme," one of three bonus tracks included on this reissue. If you're only familiar with Earth, Wind & Fire's radio hits, pick up ALL IN ALL. The harmonies, grooves and top-notch production ...

Spirit
$6.39 In the mid-'80s, Prince may have been the king of Paisley Park, but the Time frontman Morris Day was the sergeant-at-arms and the court jester simultaneously. With a flamboyant image, production aesthetic, and songwriting approach all closely aligned with those of his Purpleness, the Time appealed to the same cross-section of pop, funk, and R&B fans. The elegant psych-pop arrangement of the title track recalls AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY. The self-explanatory "My Drawers" dips into the more carnal side of the Minneapolis sound. The Time's best-known song, "Jungle Love," is infectious, high-quality synth funk with the kind of chanted interjections that have been tilting ears since the glory days of P-Funk. Jesse ...
| | Parliament Mothership Connection CD (1975) Bonus Track; Remastered
Spirit
$6.55 Includes liner notes by Tom Vickers (former P-Funk Minister Of Imformation).
Parliament was one arm in George Clinton's funk army during the 70s, a large conglomeration of groups and musicians (including Bootsy's Rubber Band, Funkadelic, The Horny Horns and others) dedicated to rewriting the rules of funk, soul and rock. Clinton's bands sounded like James Brown gone mad, partly because of the inclusion of former JB sidemen Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley, but mostly because of the alternate universe they inhabited--a sort of drugged-out traveling sci-fi soul revue.
MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION shows why Clinton's formula for funk domination of the free world worked so well. The music is tight and groovy, with heavy bass lines, precise horn runs and ultra-electronic keyboards (provided by Bernie Worrell). The lyrics are often no more than spaced-out spoken word excursions, sounding like Sly Stone reciting Isaac Asimov. And the whole concept and presentation was so totally freaked out that it would catch people off-guard, letting Clinton's teachings and philosophies seep into the unconscious. The most traditionally structured song is a love and bondage number called "Handcuffs," which shows how far Clinton and his P-Funkers had brought funk from the halcyon days of Otis ...

Spirit
$14.65 This compilation brings together some of the most popular hardcore hip-hop artists from the South, including Ying Yang Twins, Lil Jon (generally acknowledged as the King of Crunk), and David Banner. CRUNK & DISORDERLY is somewhat akin to an audio version of the film SCARFACE: It's a nonstop in-your-face journey through the darkest, most violent, sociopathic aspects of the gangsta aesthetic. Not only do you find the likes of Pastor Troy and Lil Flip rapping about shooting anybody that gets in their way, you actually hear the gunshots. ...
